BRUINS SQUEEK BY HUSKIES
The Huskies dropped two games to the UCLA Bruins in El Segundo, CA, the second place team in the Pac-8 and ranked 10th in the
ACHA-West league.
The games came down to the last few minutes, but the Bruins prevailed 5-4 in both matches. Despite the loss of team captain, Sam Kim, in the first minutes of the first game, in which he broke his collarbone from a hit from behind, the Huskies played solid,
tight hockey both offensively and defensively. However it was the Huskies defense that shined to shut UCLA's numerous rushes. Defensemen Brian Smith, Steve Savage, Len
Kandt, Mike Woods, Jim Helfield and fresher Kyle Bastien kept the team rolling with their best play of the season. The Huskies out shot the Bruins on an average and goaltender Scott Southard made big plays on each offensive attack. But the Ice Dawgs could not put it home and continued to battle back to tie the games periodically, after consistently going down by 1 or 2 goals.

UW COACHES TO START ACHA WOMEN'S DIVISION
Head coach Cindy Dayley and assistant coach Zoe Harris have been named co-vice presidents of the new ACHA's Women's Division, slated to
start in 2000-2001. The new division will include a national championship and polling for women's collegiate club teams in the United States.
Josh Brandwene, ACHA president said, "The ACHA is very pleased to be involved with the growth of women's ice hockey in the United States. We feel the addition of a Women's Division will only enhance our reputation as an organization, and add even more credibility to our level of hockey."
Harris said, "We hope that the inclusion under a nationally recognized association will not only allow for a national championship for women's club teams, but will also legitimatize the organization and development of women's club ice hockey at the university level." Dayley also added, "The ACHA lends credibility to its programs through national sponsorships, promotion and adherence to certain eligibility standards for its student-athletes."
Tom Pratt, Executive Director of the ACHA said, "The ACHA is leading the way for college hockey expansion in the United States. Our footprint is now coast to coast and border to border. We expect many of our member schools to add a women's program to compete in our new ACHA Women's division. Our schools have been leaders in creating opportunities for students to play competitive college hockey and the Women's Division will be another avenue for them to continue in this tradition."

UW SPLITS WITH WSU ON THE ROAD
Saturday, Nov. 5 Game Report: Despite the fact that the Huskies were missing their Assistant Captain and
defenseman, Eli Trokye, who's season was ended the week before with a checking-from-behind hit in the Western Washington game which
broke his collar bone and separated his shoulder, the Dawgs crushed WSU 8-2. UW newcomer, Paul Margolis #8,
started the scoring 8 minutes into the first period and it was downhill for the WSU Cougars from that point on.
It was a game of doubles with new comers Margolis and Brian Mead #18 each scoring two, and veterans Brian
Smith #2, and team Captain Sam Kim #10, also netting two each. Clay Josephy and David Gasperino each
assisted on two of the goals as well.
The Huskies outshot the Cougars 35 to 17 with UW Freshman goaltender, Alex Huynh, making big saves
throughout the game. On WSU's side, tender Stu Palmer was spectacular, stopping 27 of 35 shots.
Sunday, Nov. 6 Game Report: UW dropped an unexpected game against WSU losing 6-3 after dominating the night before.
The cougars scored first at 12:49, yet the Huskies returned the favor at 11:48 when Steve Hyun #15 scooped
up a rebound off Marty Boyd's #61 original shot and put it up stairs. UW scored again at 10:47 as Clay Josephy #16 scored
unassisted. With the UW leading 2-1 in the first period, they out shot the Cougars 20-4. WSU came out
strong in the 2nd period and #17 Matt Cannel scored his first of three for the night. Paul Margolis #8 of
the Huskies scored shortly after with a spectacular give and go with Brian Mead #18 from the corner. Yet WSU
came rumbling back and scored 2 more unanswered goals. The 2nd period ended with the Huskies down by 1.
In the 3rd period the Huskies could not quite put it together despite outshooting the Cougars 18-15. WSU
scored 2 and the Dawgs did not return the favor. WSU goaltender, Stu Palmer, had another spectacular game
stopping 40 shots in three periods. |
