Husky Hockey vs. Gonzaga - November 12 & 13, 1999

Friday, November 12 Game Report:

After several years of not meeting Gonzaga in ACHA action, Husky Hockey welcomed the Bulldogs into Olympicview Arena by crushing them 8-2 in the first of two games. Center Marty Boyd for Husky Hockey popped the first goal in with 7 minutes into the first period. Only two minutes later Brian Mead deked the last Gonzaga defenseman and buried the puck past the goalie for the second goal within minutes. The Bulldogs responded 1 minute later by scoring their first of two with a long shot from the point. In the 2nd period, Gonzaga came out with some energy and was able to net a goal at 5:28 with a shot from the point. The Huskies responded 2 minutes later after Sam Kim set up a cycle in the corner and passed out to defenseman Mike Wood who scored from the point. The Bulldogs then tightened their D and the Huskies took several penalties which slowed them down. The second period ended with the Dawgs winning 6 - 2, with 9 shots on net versus 5 against Gonzaga.

The 3rd period the Dawgs picked up their pace and once again bombarded the Bulldogs goalie. Brian Mead scored unassisted at 10:00 and 4 minutes later Marty Boyd scored from a quick pass from Steve Hyun. The Dawgs out shot the Bulldogs by 10 and ended the game with a score of 8-2.

Saturday, November 13 Game Report:

Gonzaga came out in the first with new fire and scored on the Ice Dawgs at the 1 minute mark. Bulldog Nathan William netted his first of two. The Huskies responded 1 minute later when Brian Mead scored from a pass from David Gasperino who was set up behind the net. The Dawgs scored 2 minutes later on a powerplay when Clay Josephy netted one from a pass from Marty Boyd. Boyd scored 2 minutes later when he walked out of the corner and slapped it pass the goalie uninhibited. It was his first of 7 points of the evening, including 4 goals and 3 assists. Kris Ossenkop later scored at 14:00 with a beautiful 3-man, one-touch pass that started with defenseman Brian Smith, to Clay Josephy, to Ossenkop. The final 1st period goal was scored by UW Marty Boyd in the high slot. The period ended with the Dawgs 5 and Gonzaga 1. UW goalie Alex Huyhn took 3 shots and Gonzaga took 16.

In the 2nd period the Bulldogs could not keep up with the rotating and weaving Ice Dawgs and Marty Boyd scored again with 1 minute into the period when defenseman Brian Smith popped in to get a rebound and passed to Boyd who was set up in front of the net. One minute later Boyd assisted linemate, Jason Adams, who received a pass in the high slot and scored. At the 4 minute mark Gonzaga stunned the Dawgs with two quick goals on two back-to-back powerplays for the Bulldogs. The Dawgs were able to rebound back 4 minutes later when Steve Hyun scored after Jason Adams rushed the puck down the left side and centered the pass to Hyun. The Huskies swapped goalies at 11:02 and put in senior goalie Scott Southard. The shots on net were tied in the 2nd with 6 shots for each team, yet the Dawgs dominated 8 - 2.

The 3rd period was all Huskies as they continued their quick, sharp passes and team play. Brian Mead started the scoring again at 2:00 with a pass from Clay Josephy. At 8:00, Jason Adams scored from a pass from Marty Boyd while he was standing in the high slot with his back to the net and took a whip-around shot that surprised the Bulldog goalie. A few moments later Clay Josephy scored again, this time unassisted. At 10:00, Boyd netted his final goal, which he stuffed the puck in the far corner from a pass from Steve Hyun. The final goal of the game was scored by Brian Mead from 3 quick pass play which started with defenseman Steve Savage, to Kris Ossenkop, and finally to Mead who was parked on the corner of the net. The Ice Dawgs out shot the Bulldogs 19 - 9 and won the game 13-3. Both teams racked up the penalties in a hard fought match... UW taking 27 minutes and Gonzaga taking 36 minutes.

The ice hockey team at the UW is now 3-3 in the ACHA and 1-1 in the PAC-8.

The next HOME game for HUSKY HOCKY is November 19 and 20 at Olympicview Arena against NORTHERN ARIZONA. Friday night game time is 10:00pm and Saturday night is at 11:00pm. This is the last home stance for the Dawgs before they travel down to play UCLA.
