January 16, '99 - HUSKY HOCKEY SWEEPS WSU
GAME #1 - UW vs. WSU, Friday January 14, 2000
The Husky Hockey team took two games away from the WSU
Cougars this weekend, resulting in the Ice Dawgs to
move up in the PAC-8 rankings.
In Friday night's game the Dawgs came out pumped up
with a crowd of 200 people cheering them on. Center
#61 Marty Boyd scored first after receiving a pass
from Brian Mead, and placed the puck past WSU's
goaltender Stu Palmer's left shoulder at 8:20 in the
first period. Although the Huskies had the early lead
and had control of the game, there were no more goals
scored in the first. They were however, able to
successfully shut down two powerplay opportunities for
WSU.
At 13:27 in the second #25 Jason Adams of the Huskies
skated across the high slot with a WSU defenseman
hanging on him, and scored with a wrist shot that
surprised the WSU's goaltender. Then, 3 minutes later
on a powerplay, the Husky's #18 Brian Mead rushed in
the zone, crossed in front of the net and backhanded
the puck into the lower corner. Frustrated, WSU
continued to take penalties and at 3:59 #16 Clay
Josephy received a pass from Jason Adams from right to
left and put it in the upper left hand corner over the
goalie's shoulder during a powerplay.
,p>In the 3rd it was Huskies 4 and the Cougars 0 until
#16 Clay Josephy scored his second goal of the evening
when he rushed the puck into the zone against two
defensemen, beat one and took the other across the net
and scored on a backhand shot into the top corner. Two
minutes later at 9:58, #8 Paul Margolis received a
pass in front of the net from Jason Adams and
one-timed it home. However, with 9 seconds to go, WSU
surprised the Ice Dawgs on an odd-man rush and scored
their lone goal of the game spoiling the Husky's
goaltender, Scott Southard's shutout despite having a
spectacular game. The first game ended 6-1 in favor
of the Huskies. The Husky's Jason Adams had 3 points
(1 goal and 2 assists), while Clay Josephy and Marty
Boyd had 2 points with 2 goals a piece.
GAME #2 - UW vs. WSU - Saturday January 15, 2000
The second game of the weekend against WSU the home
team saw record crowds. However, WSU game out flying
with intense speed and energy. The Dawgs were flat but
by the end of the first they got back into their
groove. The Huskies successfully killed two penalties
and then with 3: 58 to go in the first #16 Clay
Josephy rushed into the zone, while Len Kandt pulled
the defense outside, and Josephy took the clear lane
direct to the net and scored. At the end of the first
the Huskies were up 1-0.
In the second period both teams were playing tight,
tough hockey however WSU took a total of 10 minutes in
penalties to the Husky's four minutes. The Ice Dawgs
strategy to keep their cool and walk away from
skirmishes paid off and with 9:55 left on a powerplay,
the "Spoon" line came rushing into the zone and formed
a perfect triangle setup. #15 Steve Hyun set the play
up and passed to Jason Adams who one-timed the puck to
center Marty Boyd in front of the net. Boyd slammed it
home for the Husky's second goal. With two seconds to
go in the second period, the UW and WSU were skating
four against four due to penalties when #17 Kris
Ossenkop received a pass across the net from Len Kandt
which he tipped passed the goalie. At the end of the
second period it was 3-0 in favor of the Huskies.
In the 3rd period the Huskies game out strong but
found themselves shorthanded. Despite the handicap
Jason Adams was able to rush it into the zone and take
a shot on net. The WSU goalie gave up a big rebound
and #61 Marty Boyd capitalized by putting it away on a
shorthanded play. The Huskies defense continued to
hold solid with strong rushing plays by #4 Mike Woods,
#2 Brian Smith, and #28, team veteran, Jim "Monty" or
"Dad" Heldfield. #12 Steve Savage continued to pump
up the crowd with his huge checks in the defensive
zone which stopped several WSU rushes. With 7:43 left
in the game Jason Adams tallied his second assist of
the night as he threaded a pass to #15 Steve Hyun who
put it away from in front of the net. However, WSU
was able to score their lone goal on a powerplay one
minute later after #16 Clay Josephy picked up a
roughing charge. As the game came to an end both
teams where skating at top speeds and still laying big
hits, when #2 Brian Smith set up in the offensive
zone and received a pass while standing on the point.
He took a blistering slap shot that whizzed by
numerous players battling for position in front of the
net and flew by the goalie. The game ended with a
score of 6-1. Jason Adams tallied 3 points again with
1 goal and 2 assists, while Marty Boyd, Steve Hyun and
Brian Smith had 2 points, all with 1 goal and 1 assist
each.
