January 31, '99 - HUSKIES SPLIT WITH OREGON - RUIN DUCKS' NW WINNING STREAK

- The weekend honored local youth hockey association, Sno-King Amateur

January 28, 2000 - Game One

The Huskies failed to bring their top performance to the ice for the third straight game with the Oregon Ducks, resulting in a 3-0 loss. The defeat dashed the Dawgs' hopes for their first showing in the PAC-8 Championships next month in Burbank, CA. The Ducks scored two goals at the end of the first period and the final goal in the middle of the second. The Dawgs were plagued by penalties, seeming at times like they could do no right by the referee. Yet they turned it on, once again, in the third, but it was too-little-too-late. The final score was 3-0 in favor of the Ducks.

January 29, 2000 - Game Two

The Husky's beat the Ducks in the second game of the weekend and broke Oregon's winning streak against Northwest teams. The victory ends the Dawgs' season on a high note despite missing a playoff berth by 3 points, with their first victory against the Ducks in over five years. Under the helm of second year coaches Dayley and Harris, the Dawgs finish their second overall winning season in 10 years.

The Huskies game out flying in the first period of the second game, finally showing the type of hockey they are capable of playing. The Dawgs were hitting hard, skating hard and playing their systems which paid off within 6 minutes of the start of the game. #16 Clay Josephy scored from in front of the net after #20 Kyle Bastien tipped a shot that was fired in from the point by #28 Jim Heldfield. Three minutes later a similar goal was scored when #12 Steve Savage took a barreling slap shot from the point, which was tipped by Clay Josephy and then finally put away by #18 Brian Mead. The first period ended with the Dawgs up 2-0.

In between periods KISS 106.1 with the morning producer, Huggy Bear, rocked the crowd with music and give-aways. The first annual Husky Hockey Mascot Shoot-out, sponsored by KISS, was held -- with fans teamed up with specific mascots. In attendance was the Mitzel's bear, Ivar's clam, Old Country Buffet's bee, Red Robin's robin among others. Fans won free meals and Seattle Sonic tickets.

The second period the Dawgs were plagued with penalties at every move, however they were still able to win the period. While the Ducks scored on a powerplay at 13:55 into the second, one minute later the Dawgs game charging back when freshman #24 David Gasperino deked a player behind the net and stepped out front and whizzed it passed the goalie's left shoulder. The final goal scored by the Dawgs in the second period was by #25 Jason Adams, with one of the most beautiful breakaways of the season. Adams received a through pass from #61 Marty Boyd that split the Oregon's defense. Adams wheeled down the ice and deked the goalie's pants off to score the fourth goal of the game for the Dawgs. At the end of the second the Huskies were up 4-1 with the hundreds of fans going ballistic in the stands in favor of the home-town team. The Dawgs continued to dominate despite having half their team in the penalty box and at times only skating with three players on the ice. The Dawgs took nine penalties to the Ducks' two. For some reason the refs seemed to have it "in" for the home team for the second game in a row. This time the team made it a non-factor in their strategy.

In the third the Dawgs continued to play their game and ignored all the outside forces against them. The Dawgs also continued to ride off the emotions of the huge crowd and scored 8 seconds into the period. Clay Josephy netted his second goal of the evening from a pass from linemate Kyle Bastien. Again the Dawgs seemed to have a mysterious magnet that put them in the penalty box, yet the Ducks were unable to score on the powerplay. The Ducks did score six minutes into the third but the momentum was still with the Huskies. In the third the Huskies had 5 penalties to the Ducks' two, yet the team continued to play solid defense to squash any offensive drives by the other team. The Huskies defense had a strong showing by playing physical and patient hockey. Goaltender Scott Southard had a phenomenal game stopping the Ducks' impressive cycling systems and quick feet. In the end the Dawgs controlled the game and when the final buzzer rang, it was a 5-2.

Husky Hockey would like to thank their sponsors and their faithful fans for another wonderful and exciting season. Without out the support of the volunteers, the sponsors and the fans, the club organization at the University of Washington would not be able to continue to grow and flourish in the future. See you next year!
