UW vs WWU - Game 1 - Home
January 19, 2001
Husky Hockey hit a bump in the road at
their last home game of the year by dropping the match 3-2 to Western
Washington University.
WWU went up on the scoreboard first when
they put the puck in the net on a power play at 15:21. The first period
continued from there with strong defense on both sides stepping up to the
plate. The Huskies ended up taking 7 shots on net, while the Viking took 6
shots on net.
The Huskies started the second period at
17:38 on a power play but could not convert. Six minutes later the Viking
scored their second goal. Three minute later the Huskies put their first
goal on the board when Marty Boyd received a pass from defenseman Prescott
Littlefield, which led to a breakaway. Boyd then beat the goalie left to
right. At 7:08 WWU went on a power play but could not score on the stingy
UW defense. Then two minutes later the Viking scored. The Huskies got on
the board with one minute left in the second when Paul Margolis collected
a big rebound off the WWU goalie, and put it in the back of the net. The
period ended with the Vikings leading 3-2 and the Huskies out shooting
them 19 to 7.
The third period was all back and forth
action. The Viking turned then picked up the pace but despite out shooting
the Dawgs 15 to 9, they could not get the puck past goaltender Scott
Southard. However, the Dawgs were also unable to put the puck in the net
with the rough and tumble WWU defense perfecting the clutch and grab game.
The game ended with no goals by either team in the third period and the
Huskies losing the WWU 3-2 despite out shooting them 35 to 28. The Vikings
had 10 minutes in penalties plus a 10-minute penalty for checking from
behind, while the Huskies had 10 minutes in penalties as well.
