Away UW vs WWU: 11/4/00

Huskies Sweep Vikings

Saturday night the Huskies traveled to their first away game of the year to play the second game of the weekend against the Western Washington University Vikings. The Huskies finished the weekend by sweeping the Vikings, 8-6 and then 7-2.

The Huskies came out strong in the first period and seemed to have put both their offense and defense cores together. Despite the win on Friday night at home, the Dawgs did not connect their two units on the ice until Saturday night. They scored within the first 4 minutes of the game to quiet the impressive Western fan base. Rookie Bryce Kennedy received a pass from Clay Josephy and scored with a booming slap shot from the point. The Huskies scored seven minutes later, this time while short-handed. Captain Sam Kim fore-checked the Vikings breakout, stole the puck in front of the net, beat a defender and then the goalie. Three minutes later Josephy scored by picking up a rebound shot from Kim. The first period ended with the Huskies in the lead 3-0, playing their best hockey of the year. The Huskies out hustled, played and shot the Vikings 14-6 in the first period and had one goal taken back after the goal was knocked off the net. The Huskies had 6 minutes of penalties and the Vikings had 10 minutes in the box.

In the second period the Huskies came out flat but were able to score at 15:57 when Marty Boyd, who’s back was to the net, just flung the puck around and surprised the goalie. Two minutes later, when the Huskies were short-handed, Brett Lawrence cleared the puck into the Viking zone and the slow roller was misjudged by the goalie and the puck snuck under her stick and into the goal. A few minutes later, at 12:35, Western scored on a power play, Lalonde to Madden. The Vikings duo matched up again to score one minutes later. Two minutes later Brian Mead of the Huskies flew into the zone and scored the final goal of the second period by putting the puck in the lower left corner of the net. This time it was the Vikings who out shot the Huskies 16-10. The Huskies had two goals called back again after the net was knocked off its anchors. The Huskies had 8 minutes in penalties, while the Vikings had 6 minutes.

The third period the Huskies came out with new determination and again began to dominate the play. During the heat of the game the Huskies had two goals called back again for the net coming off it moorings. The Huskies received only one shot on net from the Vikings and scored the final goal at 4:05 when Boyd passed from behind the net to Lawrence who put it away. The Huskies spent 8 minutes in the box, while the Viking spent 6 minutes sitting.

The Huskies out shot the Vikings 46-17 and the teams each had 22 minutes in penalties. The final score was 7-2. Brett Lawrence led the Huskies with two goals, while Sam Kim, Clay Josephy, Bryce Kennedy and Marty Boyd had one goal and one assist each. Joe Davis was in net for the Huskies and stopped 14 shots. David Merrill and Jill Leonetti split the goal tending duty for the Vikings and stopped 39 shots.
