UW
vs. WSU: 10/27/00
The Huskies were victorious in their
first PAC-8 conference game of the year, beating the WSU Cougars, 14-3.
In the first game of the weekend
against the Cougars, the UW Huskies scored with less than 5 minutes into
the period to set the tone for the game. Freshman Brett Lawrence was
hauled down from behind and awarded the 2nd penalty shot of the year.
Lawrence scored after faking left. Four minutes later Lawrence passed from
behind the net and Marty Boyd scored on the front doorstep. Seconds later
Lawrence connected with line mate and assistant captain, Steve Hyun, who
put it passed the scrambling Cougar goalie. Two minutes later the Cougars
returned the favor at 9:59 into the game. One-minute later captain Sam Kim
skated into the zone, deked several players until the puck was
poke-checked away. Line mate, Kyle Bastien, picked up the puck and shot
from a long distance and beat the goalie over his left shoulder. The final
goal of the first period was again from the same line when Kim passed to
assistant captain Clay Josephy in the neutral zone to set up a perfect
breakaway. Josephy sped into the zone and beat the goalie by placing it
into the upper right hand corner. The first period ended with a score of
5-1 in favor of the Dawgs.
In the second period the Cougars
game out with a vengeance and scored first with 6 minutes into the game.
The Huskies did not respond until 8 minutes later when Josephy had
yet another breakaway when he skated through the neutral zone and
scored again over the goalies left shoulder. One minute later Lawrence
connected with Steve Savage who set up in front of the net and on-timed it
on the ice past the goalie. Twenty seconds later Marty Boyd entered the
Cougar’s zone, dropped it back Lawrence, who passed it to Hyun who shot
on net. Meanwhile, Boyd crashed the net and scored off a big rebound. Four
minutes later the Cougars retaliated and scored with less than a minute to
go in the 2nd period. The score was 9 to 3 with the Dawgs still in the
lead.
The third period the Huskies rallied
and scored 5 more goals. Three minutes into the period the Huskies had a
power play. Kim took a face off in the Cougars zone and dropped it
immediately back to defenseman, Prescott Littlefield, who took a
tremendous slap shot that buzzed by the goalies right shoulder. Six
minutes later the puck was dumped into the offensive zone and David
Gasperino passed to Paul Margolis who one-timed it to Brian Mead in front
of the net. Mead backhanded it into the upper left corner. The Cougars
found themselves short-handed once again and Lawrence took advantage by
skating from left to right across the net and beat the goalie on the lower
right side. Lawrence scored again for a hat trick for the evening as he
received a pass from Bastien and scored in front of the net. And finally,
Gasperino walked out from the corner at 18:22 and scored the final goal of
the evening.
The final score was 14 – 3 in
favor of the Huskies. The Huskies had 16 minutes in penalties while the
Cougars had 20 minutes. Husky goalie, Scott Southard took 22 shots, while
Cougars goalie, Stu Palmer received 46 shots. Lawrence had 7 points for
the evening and a hat trick, while Kim, Boyd and Hyun had 3 points each.
