UW vs USC - Game 2 - Away
December 2, 2000
In game two of the UW vs USC hockey match,
the teams played evenly for the first four minutes. Each team was rushing
fast and furious up and down the ice. It was at 13:28 when the first goal
was put up on the scoreboard, this time by the Huskies. Brett Lawrence
stole the puck in the neutral zone, skated past one D, and used another as
a screen as he shot it past the USC goalie’s right shoulder. The Huskies
continued to dominate and keep the puck in the USC zone, but could not put
another away until late in the first. Penalties for both teams again
caused 4-on-4 play. Lawrence once again rushed the puck down one side of
the USC zone and was able to get it on the goalie that brushed the puck
aside, and lost his stick. The puck popped out and Steve Hyun was able to
do a one-time slap shot to the bottom right of the stickless goalie. The
Huskies were up 2-0. But USC came charging back, and again 4-on-4, stepped
in and scored on the Huskies. Less than a minute later, still 4-on-4, a
slap shot by USC proved accurate and tied the game 2-2. The period ended
with a tied score, 14 shots for UW and 11 shots for USC.
The second period the UW started with a power
play because of a slashing call on USC in the last second of the first
period, but the UW could not convert. Then at 17:17 the Huskies scored
again when Paul Margolis broke up the middle, shot the puck and Brian Mead
collected the big rebound to put it down low in the net. Again, another
4-on-4 play. USC then went on a power play at 16:20 for a slashing call on
the UW. They could not convert. Then the Huskies found themselves on a
power play at 15:04 for a USC hooking call, but could not put the puck in
the net. Then again they failed to score at 12:21 on a power play for a
call on USC for roughing. USC finally scored at 6:19 on a power play when
the UW was called for holding and USC stepped in and scored. USC scored
again on another power play when the UW was called for kneeing at 5:18.
USC crashed the net and crammed the puck in. USC was then called for
kneeing at 3:26 but the UW could not put the puck home. Not until 2:51 did
the UW finally score when Brian Smith took a shot from the point, the puck
tipped of Marty Boyd’s shaft and then was tipped in by Brett Lawrence. A
very hard-hitting period ended with a tie score of 4-4. The Huskies took 8
shots while USC took 7 shots on net.
The first few minutes of the third period was
a huge offensive push by the Huskies. They control the zone until a
sneak-attack rush by USC. At 17:45 USC rushed the goalie and the puck slid
in. The UW then was called for charging which led to USC’s fifth goal.
Then again at 13:48 the Huskies were called for holding and USC scored
with a one-man advantage. Then at 9:46 the Huskies were called for high
sticking and USC scored moments later as they stepped out of the corner.
USC now led 7-4 after coming into the third period tied. The UW went up
one man at 5:17 because USC was charged with holding and then again at
4:30 for charging, but the UW could not put the puck away against the
strong USC penalty kill. The third period ended with USC out shooting the
UW 12-9.
The game ended in favor of USC, 7-4. The UW
out shot USC 31 to 30, while the UW and USC each had 14 minutes in
penalties. Husky Brett Lawrence had 2 goals and 1 assist, while goalie Joe
Davis saved 24 shots.
