UW vs USC - Game 1 - Away
December 1, 2000

In game one of the UW vs. USC it took the Huskies a few minutes of the first period to get use to the speed of USC. However, within 5 minutes the Huskies found their pace. The first penalty was drawn by USC at 13:09 for interference, however the Huskies could not score on the man advantage. Approximately 4 minutes later USC went up by one goal from a long shot from the side of the zone, which found the upper left corner of the Husky’s goal. The Huskies picked up their pace and started dominating the play by keeping the action in USC’s zone, yet they could not put the puck away. With 1:15 left in the first period the Huskies tallied their first penalty for holding, which they killed. The first period ended with USC leading by one and out shooting the Huskies 16 to 6.

The Huskies started the second period with renewed energy. At 16:51 Husky Brian Mead drove the puck deep towards to USC goalie and David Gasperino was able to poke it home. Two minutes later USC was on a power play, again for a Husky hold. The Dawgs did not convert. Then it was USC turn to be shorthanded because of charging. At 9:28 the two teams found themselves playing 4-on-4 and USC capitalized by a trickle-in-goal at 8:36. The second period ended with a good showing by both teams but USC still lead by one. This time, the Huskies out shot USC 12-9.

The third period started with the Huskies taking an immediate penalty for delay of game. USC capitalized on the power play and scored at 19:20.Less than two minutes later the Huskies responded as Brian Mead stepped around the net and wrapped the puck to David Gasperino for his second goal. The score was now 3-2. The pace went back and forth with rushes by both teams. At 13:32 USC scored again by a missed hit by the UW. At 12:36 the Huskies took another holding call, yet killed the penalty. A few minutes later the Dawgs were called for interference. It wasn’t until 5:17 when Matt Carlson received a pass from Brett Lawrence, who was along the boards, and did a turn-around-whip-shot that found the far corner of the net. The Huskies found themselves down 4-3. But 15 seconds later USC scored on a rush to the net. Then three minutes later at 2:06, USC rushed down the side of the Huskies zone on a 2-on-2 and slipped the puck across the ice to the other side and poked it in for the final goal. USC won 6-3 but not until they took crosschecking and high stick penalties at 00:07 and 00:03 to finish the game. The Huskies out shot USC 12-9 in the final period.

Despite the Huskies ability to keep the puck deep in USC zone for a good portion of the game, USC was able to capitalize on their strong rushes and excellent power play. The game ended with USC out shooting the Huskies 43 to 31 and winning 6-3. Husky David Gasperino had 2 goals both assist by Brian Mead. Husky goalie Scott Southard made 33 saves.
