UW vs UCLA - Game 2 - Home
January 7, 2001

Game two against UCLA was a hard-hitting game, which left the fans on their feet. The evening began with a short ceremony honoring youth hockey in the Seattle area. The night's action was dedicated to SnoKing Amateur Hockey as Art Johnson, president of SKAH, dropped the puck. With over 300 people cheering the Huskies on, the Dawgs were back to their old selves, leaving the previous night's game out of their minds knowing that the winning of the evening would most likely secure 2nd place in the PAC-8 standings.

The Huskies came out flying and were able to capitalize within the first five minutes of the game. Matt Carlson got the puck deep, and then Clay Josephy fed it to Sam Kim. Kim then snapped it into the upper right corner of the net. UCLA was able to capitalize on a power play 5 minutes later but within a few minutes the Dawgs were back on top. Brett Lawrence won a face-off in the Bruins' end and Steve Hyun was able to feed it back to him for the goal. The first period ended with the Huskies dominating the play and winning 2-1.

The second period the Dawgs were swarming. It took them 5 minutes to score again when Clay Josephy stepped into the zone on a one-on-one, shot the puck, which ricocheted off the defensemen's leg and into the goal. A few minutes later Husky defenseman Prescott Littlefield took a booming shot from the point, which also found the back of the net after being tipped by David Gasperino. Then, at 2:02 Clay Josphey poked another one home to end the period with a lead of 5-1. The Dawgs out shot the Bruins 28 to 5 in that period alone.

The third period started on a power play because UCLA had received a penalty at the end of the previous period. At 19:21 defenseman Kyle Bastine scored from the blue line with a tremendous slap shot. The Huskies continued to make great passes, excellent defensive decisions and play their systems well. Goalie Scott Southard held strong and continued to stop UCLA's odd-man rushes. It was one of the hardest hitting periods and games of the Huskies season. Big hits were mad by both teams as bodies were flying and things began to get really rough. Both teams seem to challenge each other physically as they matched hit for hit. Then at 11:04 David Gasperino shot on net and Paul Margolis was able to capitalize on the rebound. The game continued to the end with more hard skating, controlled tempers, but physical play. The Huskies were back, and secured 2nd place in the PAC-8 for the moment by beating UCLA 7-1.

Shots on net:  UCLA 19  vs  UW 56
