UW vs UCLA - Game 1 - Home
January 6, 2001
Husky Hockey returned to action
after the Winter Break by hosting the UCLA Bruins on Saturday, January 6th
at 10pm. The Huskies took the ice looking a bit flat yet capitalized with
12:40 left in the game when Sam Kim set Clay Josephy up in front of the
net, when Josephy spun around backwards, wheeled around again and put the
puck upstairs to knock the keeper's water bottle off the net. The first
period continued to go back and forth with rushes by both teams. The
Huskies continued to make bad passes and missed checks until the period
ended with one goal ahead.
When the second period started the
Huskies looked as if they had found some energy. Within 5 minutes of the
start, Brett Lawrence fore checked a Bruin defenseman, stole the puck and
deked the goalie to the lower right side of the net. However, leading by
two goals seemed to cause the Dawgs to fall into a false sense of security
and within 4 minutes the Bruins capitalized on a botch breakout by the
Huskies. Then a bit later the Huskies had a 3-on-5 power play, which fell
apart and the Bruins scored to tie the game 2-2. With 32 seconds left in
the period Husky Matt Carlson walked out of the high corner to the high
slot and sniped the puck into the upper right corner to put the Dawgs up
by one.
In the third period the Huskies
still did not have their systems or legs concrete in the game. The holiday
break seemed to have taken its toll. Matt Carlson was able set up Clay
Josephy who scored near corner but UCLA returned the favor moments later
on a power play. Then with less than five minutes to go, a goalmouth
scramble lead to the tying goal for the Bruins. The 3rd period ended with
the Huskies in near shock and the game tied 4-4.
Going into the overtime shootout,
players from each team were picked to take the role on for one-on-one
battle. The shootout ended with the Bruins beating the Huskies by scoring
2 goals to the Dawgs none, after the Huskies hit a post and two players
fell during their attempt. Final score was 6-2 in favor of the Bruins,
causing the next night game to decide who would place second in the PAC-8
standings.
