UW vs UCLA - Game 3 - Away
December 3, 2000

The UW finished their three game road trip to Southern California by playing UCLA. The UW had never beaten UCLA in recent history.

The game Sunday afternoon started at a fast pace. Each team felt out their speed as they rushed back and forth for the first three minutes of the game. Then the Huskies took control and started forcing the puck in UCLA zone. The tables had turned and the play was 80% in UCLA’s end. The Huskies had the first power play because a UCLA high sticking call, but they could not put the puck in the net. The period started coming to a close and each team pushed the envelope. It was not until 2:49 when UCLA rushed the puck, a UW defense fell, and the UCLA player beat the UW goalie. The period ended with UCLA up by one point.

The Huskies started the second period with a new purpose. Within two minutes they realized the damage they could do when Steve Hyun streaked through the neutral zone, passed to Marty Boyd who stepped into the zone and found UCLA goalies’ five-hole. UCLA then got a tripping call which was followed by a UW roughing. UCLA was then called for slashing. At 10:45 Boyd fore checked UCLA’s defense, stole the puck and scored in the lower corner. A few seconds later UCLA took a high stick call and the UW was able to capitalize on it. Brett Lawrence backhanded the puck over the heads of UCLA’s defense and Clay Josephy was able to rush in, beat the defense and rush the net. Josephy put the puck top shelf and was checked into the net, thus breaking the shaft of his stick. The Huskies then lead 3-1. Next, the Huskies took a roughing penalty but UCLA could not convert. Then UCLA found themselves with a 5-on-3 advantage but the Huskies played tight defense and didn’t allow a goal to be scored. The final goal in the second period was scored at 2:34 when UCLA’s defense attempted to clear the puck; Marty Boyd intercepted it behind the net, and then passed it out front to Brett Lawrence who put it home. UCLA took one more penalty before the horn at 1:22 for slashing.

The Huskies stepped into the third period leading 4-1. UCLA was short one man to start off the period but killed the power play. They then were charged for hooking at 13:00 but the Huskies did not score. The UW then took a tripping penalty, which cause a 4-on-4 situation. Both teams skated even. Then at 9:47 Paul Margolis miss-hit a shot, which trickled to David Gasperino who scored on the UCLA goalie’s lower right side. At 8:27 Clay Josephy passed the puck to Sam Kim, who rushed it through the neutral zone, jammed it at the goalie and Josephy came in to stuff it for the goal. Then at 6:12 the UW was called for roughing and they killed off the penalty. UCLA finished off the game by taking 5 more penalties including three roughing calls, a misconduct and a major high sticking.

The game ended with a score of UW 6 and UCLA 1. The UW had 12 minutes in penalties while UCLA had 18 minutes in penalties, plus a 10-minute misconduct and 5-minute high stick. UW took 35 shots while UCLA took 29 shots on net.
