UW vs Stanford - Game 1 - Home
January 12, 2001
The Huskies came out flat against
Stanford and they immediately jumped on the opportunity. The Cardinals played consistent, well-positioned and tenacious hockey, which gave the
dragging Huskies fits. However, the Dawgs did score first when Brett
Lawrence broke into the zone and whizzed one into the lower left corner of
Stanford's goal. Later, Sam Kim made a long, mid-zone pass to set up Clay
Josephy with a breakaway. He beat the Stanford goalie over his right
shoulder. Then, with a two-goal lead, the Dawgs fell apart. At 15:36
Stanford's defense found the back of the Husky's net with a slap shot from
the point. Less than a minute later the Stanford scored shorthanded, while
the Dawgs could not pull their power play together. The first period ended
with Husky Matt Carlson creating a give-and-go play with Sam Kim, with
Carlson snapping it into the upper right corner of the net. The period
ended with a 3-2 lead by the Dawgs, out shooting their competitors 20 to
9.
The second period started and the Dawgs
were still flat. Stanford continued to play solid hockey and scored their
3rd goal within 2 minutes of the start of the period. The Dawgs then had a
power play opportunity, but could not convert. Finally at 13:05 Sam Kim
placed a beautiful backhand into Stanford's net. Then at 8:54 Matt Carlson
copied the play and scored a backhander for himself. The third period
ended with the Dawgs leading 5-3. The Cardinals closed the gap in respect to
shots on net: The Huskies 15 to Stanford 9 shots on net.
The third period started with not much
more energy by the Huskies than the first two periods. Stanford continued
to play hard. At 15:33 Matt Carlson scored again as he stepped over the
blue line and his slap shot found the upper left corner of the net. But
moments later Stanford had an odd-man rush, which they capitalized on. In
the last 5 minutes of the game the Dawgs finally found their pace and
stepped things up. At 1:00 Clay Josephy scored while setting up on the far
post and then scored again at :47 seconds to go with a slap shot. Again,
the Huskies out shot Stanford, but this time only 9 to 7. For the entire
game, the Huskies out shot Stanford 44 to 25. The intensity of the last
moments of the game gave hope that the Huskies would be back to their
old-selves the next night.
