UW vs. Stanford: 11/11/00

The Huskies traveled to their first away games of the year in the PAC-8 conference by competing against Stanford in California. Stanford had their infamous band (well, a faction of it) out in full force, which added to the excitement of the game. No taunting yells, or big horn blows at the Husky team, or "Death March" tunes played for the coaching staff could deter the Huskies from scoring. All in good fun and enjoyed by all, the band and screaming trees could not help the Crimson put the puck in the net. The final score was Huskies 8 and Stanford 2.

The Huskies came out strong and scored within 50 seconds of the start of the game. Brian Mead scored from a pass from David Gasperino. Two minutes later Husky Matt Carlson scored when the goalie cleared the puck from a shot from Clay Josephy, but the goal was pulled back for an in-the-crease violation. Stanford had some good rushes and chances but Husky goalie, Scott Southard, made big saves on the odd-man rushes. It took the Huskies 14 minutes of hard work and dominated play to score again. This time it was Paul Margolis who crossed the Stanford zone high and passed to Gasperino who was set up on the far corner. Gasperino backhanded the pass into the net. However, with 2 minutes to go, the Huskies had a breakdown in there own zone, which allowed Stanford to get on the scoreboard in the first period. The time ended with the Huskies leading, 2-1.

The Huskies came into the second period with renewed energy. The Dawgs scored within 30 seconds of the start when defenseman Mike Woods shot the puck off the boards and to center ice. Clay Josephy shot a one-timer passed the Stanford goalie. Three minutes later Stanford responded on a power play after the Huskies were called for interference. It would be the last goal Stanford would score for the night. A minute later the Huskies broke-out of their zone with great precision, Brian Mead cut across the neutral zone, beat a Stanford defense and then the goalie. It was his second goal of the night.

The third period was all Huskies. The team dominated the play and was clicking as a full unit on the ice. At 16:15 the Dawgs were on a power play, this time for a Stanford interference call. The puck was shot in by Brett Lawrence, which caused a pile up at the mouth of the net. Clay Josephy was able to butt-end the puck in the net as he lay underneath both teams. It was his second goal of the night. The Huskies continued to dominate the play, kill off penalties and shoot on net. Eight minutes after the last goal, Steve Hyun shot the puck across the ice to Marty Boyd who placed it in the upper right corner of the goal. Three minutes later the Huskies were short-handed, because a holding call, but were able to score none-the-less. Sam Kim fore-checked the puck away from Stanford and passed to Clay Josphey, who beat a player and had the patience to wait for the goalie to go down on the ice before chipping it into the upper right corner. Josephy would end the night with a hat trick. And then, with less than two minutes to go, the Huskies final goal was by Marty Boyd off a pass from Steve Hyun, in similar fashion as they scored earlier.

The final was 8-2 in favor of the Huskies. Goalie Scott Southard game up big several times when the Dawgs back-check let down. Southard took 19 shots from Stanford while the Crimson's goalie took 53 shots from the Huskies. Husky Clay Josephy had 3 goals, while Brian Mead and Marty Boyd had two goals apiece.
