Game Report
UW vs Stanford 11/10/2000 Game 1

The Huskies made their first PAC-8 road trip to Stanford and despite looking sluggish in the first two periods and trying to adjust to Stanford’s rink, the Huskies were able to beat the Crimson 8-2 in their first match with them in over 3 years.

Brian Mead started the scoring in the first period when he put the puck in the back of the net, from a pass from David Gasperino, within the first minute of the game. Two minutes later Clay Josephy’s huge slap shot was rebounded by Matt Carlson when the goalie cleared the puck. However, the goal was called back for a crease violation. At 3:31 Paul Margolis crossed the high slot and passed to David Gasperino, who was position on the far corner of the net, backhanded the puck into the upper corner. Stanford responded thirty seconds later and scored with two minutes left in the first. The end of the first period ended with a score of 2-1, with the Dawgs in the lead.

The Huskies stepped into the second period still playing lifeless and flat, but were able to score within the first thirty seconds. Defenseman Mike Woods smacked the puck off the boards to Clay Josephy who was standing in the high slot. Josephy one-timed the puck and it whizzed by the Stanford goalie. Nine minutes later Stanford was on a power play for boarding penalty on the Huskies and was able to capitalize on the man-up situation. A few minutes later, at regular strength, Husky’s “blue line” broke out of their zone, hit Brian Mean in the neutral zone where he beat the Stanford defense and then stepped into the zone and deked the goalie for his second goal of the night. The second period ended with a score of 4-2 in favor of the Huskies.

The third period the Huskies seemed to have shaken off their air plane legs as they came out flying and dominate the play for the rest of the game. When the Huskies found themselves on a power play, Clay Josephy ended up at the bottom of a two-team pile up at the mouth of the goal and was able to butt-end the puck past the goalie for his second goal of the night. Eight minutes later Steve Hyun passed from the blue line to Marty Boyd in the high slot whose one-time-slap-shot found the upper right corner of the net. Three minutes later the Huskies found themselves short-handed again, but this time the fore check of Sam Kim and Clay Josephy paid off. Kim stole the puck and was able to sneak it over to Josephy who walked around the goalie, waited for him to drop, and then put it up and over him into the net. It was Josephy’s first hat trick of the season. Then, at the end of the game, at 1:30, Steve Hyun hit Marty Boyd with a pass and he put it home.

The final score was 8-2 for the Huskies. The final stats for the game were: Stanford had 24 shots on the Husky goalie Scott Southard and logged 14 minutes in penalties. The Huskies took 53 shots on Stanford’s goalie and had 8 minutes in penalties. The Husky’s Clay Josephy had three goals; Brian Mead and Marty Boyd had 2 goals each. David Gasperino and Clay Josephy had 3 points while Brian Smith, Brian Mead, Paul Margolis, Steve Hyun and Marty Boyd all had 2 points. Defenseman Bryce Kennedy was plus 4 for the night.
