UW vs Oregon - Game 2 - Away
For the Athletic
Awards I-5 Cup
February 3rd, 2001
The Huskies dominated game number two
with the Oregon Ducks from the start. They played one of their most
consistent games both offensively and defensively, with both units working
together as well as making big plays on their own. With the goal of using
this game to prepare for the PAC-8 Championship, the Huskies fine-tuned
their game.
While the Dawgs did not convert on their
first power play, they did score on their second power play at 10:20 when
Brett Lawrence zipped down the middle of the ice and found the back of the
net. The Dawgs continued to dominate, but were scored on at 5:52 when
Oregon scored on a power play. The period ended with the Huskies tied 1-1,
out shooting the Ducks by one and with one less penalty.
Pleased with the first period and ready
to improve, the Huskies took off in the second period. The Husky defense
squashed Oregon's offensive efforts with strong physical play and
continued to feed the team's forwards with great set-up plays. At 14:55
Brian Mead scored off of a rebound. Then at 5:27 Marty Boyd scored from
the high slot from a pass from Steve Hyun. Then Brett Lawrence scored a
minute later on a power play, from a pass from defenseman Kyle Bastien.
The second period ended with the Huskies leading 4-1, out shooting the
Ducks 13 to 5 and taking 2 penalties compared to their opponent's 3
penalties.
The third period the Huskies continued to
perfect their play. The Ducks had several odd-man rushes but the Huskies
defense played them well, while Scott Southard stopped several break-aways.
At 8:22 Sam Kim scored unassisted on a break away and then at 5:27 Brian
Mead scored from a pass from Kim. The third period ended with the Huskies
winning 6-1 and out shooting the Ducks 11-4. The Ducks took two penalties
plus a 10-minute un-sportsman-like penalty, while Dawgs took 2 penalties.
The Huskies ended the PAC-8 season by
sweeping Oregon and Stanford 4 game in a row each, by beating UCLA 2 games
to 1, and losing 2 games in a row to USC. The Dawgs will compete in the
PAC-8 Championships, in Eugene Oregon, February 16 and 17, 2001, for the
first time ever. The Dawgs will enter the tournament in 2nd place and
compete against UCLA on the 16th at 5:00pm. The Huskies PAC-8 record for
the 2000-2001 season is 12-3, the Dawg's best finish to-date.
