UW vs Oregon - Game 1 - Away
For the Athletic
Awards I-5 Cup
February 2nd, 2001
The Huskies traveled to Eugene, Oregon
for the final PAC-8 games of the season and to battle the Oregon Ducks for
the inaugural Athletic Awards I-5 Cup title. The Ducks needed two wins to
force the series in a shootout, because of two loses against the Huskies
earlier in the season in Seattle. The Dawgs only needed one win to clinch
the title, which they hoped to do Friday night.
The Huskies came out of the gate flat in
the first period and immediately dropped down one goal when the Oregon
Ducks scored from the far corner at 17:24. At 16:36 the Huskies attempted
to capitalize on their first power play, but did not put the puck home.
The Ducks still dominated until 7:31when Matt Carlson stepped into the
zone, from a long pass from Bryce Kennedy, and scored off his blasted slap
shot. But the tie did not last long because Oregon came flying back and
scored two quick goals while shorthanded. The second period ended with the
Ducks up 3-1, despite being out shot 10-6. The Ducks took 2 penalties,
while the Dawgs took one.
The second period started with Oregon on
a power play, which they scored on at 17:39 to go up 4-1. But the Huskies
returned the favor when Steve Hyun scored at 15:55, which sparked the team
on scoring spree. Less than a minute later the Dawgs found themselves on a
power play, and Brett Lawrence set up Marty Boyd for a one-timer, which he
scored on. Then at 10:48, with 4-on-4 play, Matt Carlson stepped over the
blue line and found the upper left corner to tie the game. The Ducks then
went on a power play at 8:30, but they could not convert. The Ducks went
up on a 4-to-3 advantage, but still could not score. The Ducks then halled
down Bryce Kennedy on a near break-away, causing two players to smash into
the Ducks goalie, putting him out the rest of the game, and setting the
Dawgs on another power play. On the man advantage the Dawgs could not
convert. Oregon took a delayed penalty, the Dawgs pulled their goalie
adding an extra skater, Marty Boyd, who assisted Sam Kim when he scored
from the high slot. The Huskies scored again when Prescott Littlefield's
booming slap shot found the back of the Ducks goal. The second period
ended with the Dawgs scoring 5 goals within 12 minutes. Each team took ten
penalty minutes, the Huskies out shot the Ducks 10-5, and led 6-3 in
goals.
The third period heated up quickly with
penalties flying left and right. The Huskies scored at 16:15 on 4-on-4
play when Bryce Kennedy's slap shot zipped past the Duck's goalie. Then at
7:32 the Huskies went on another power play, until 6:46 when they went on
a 4-on-3 power play. At 5:36 the play went back to 4-on-4 and Oregon
scored at 5:13. A minute later the Ducks scored again to make the game
within one goal, with the Huskies still in the lead. But the Dawgs were
not done when a minute later, while the Ducks were on a power play, Clay
Josephy scored while shorthanded at 2:21. The game ended with the Huskies
winning 8-6, taking 20 minutes in penalties compared to Oregon 28 minutes
of penalties plus a game misconduct ejection for roughing from the bench.
The Huskies out shot the Ducks 33-20 for the game and 11-9 in the third
period.
The Huskies won the Athletic Awards I-5
Cup for the inaugural 2000-2001 season, winning the series 3-0.
