Huskies vs. Ducks - Game 2 -
Saturday November 18, 2000
Saturday's game against the Ducks was
similar to Friday night's game with a few minor exceptions. The Husky's
defense stopped the Ducks from getting to the net, giving the Huskies an
offensive night. The Dawgs were not as tenacious but seemed to dominate
the play anyway. Assisting with this was the Ducks concentration on the
supposed bad calls by the refs instead of their own play.
The first goal for the Huskies was scored
at 11:22 when Sam Kim tipped the puck off a shot and then Matt Carlson
tipped it into the back of the net. Throughout the period Ducks were
plagued with penalties, but the Huskies could not convert on their power
plays. The first period ended with the Huskies up 1-0 and looking to pick
up the play in the second period. The Dawgs took 19 shots on net to
Oregon's 5.
The next period the Dawgs did pick things
up and both teams went back and forth with picking up penalties. At 13:33
Clay Josephy rushed the net, got the puck caught up in his feet, but was
able to pass through his legs to Matt Carlson who was in front of the
goal. Carlson pulled the puck and walked around the goalie. The second
period ended with the Huskies taking 15 shots and the Ducks taking 8 shots
on net.
In the third period, the Ducks took 1
more shot on net than the Dawgs, but the Huskies were able to widen their
lead by scoring two more goals. But first, within the first 10 seconds of
the period, the Ducks scored. Three minutes later Husky Matt Carlson
stepped out of the corner and fed Brian Mead who tipped it in for the
goal. Then, six minutes later defenseman Bryce Kennedy took a thundering
slap shot from the point, which bounced off an Oregon defenseman and into
the net for the final goal.
Coach Dayley said, "We played much
more like ourselves. We played solid hockey and the team kept its focus on
the end result no matter how much Oregon tried to deter us."
Matt Carlson had 2 goals while Clay
Josephy and Bryce Kennedy had 1 goal and 1 assist each. Carlson and
Josephy were +3 for the night, while Sam Kim and Bryce Kennedy were +2.
The Huskies took 43 shots on net compared to the Ducks 23 shots. Oregon
had 27 minutes in penalties including a 10-minute misconduct, while
Washington had 17 minutes in penalties.
The Huskies lead the Ducks 2-0 in the I-5
Cup Series. Two more games will be played in Eugene to determine the
inaugural winner of the I-5 Cup.
