Win for Huskies vs UCLA in PAC-8 Semi-finals
- Away
February 16th, 2001
The semi-final game for
the 2000-2001 PAC-8 Championship Tournament in Eugene, Oregon against UCLA
on Friday, February 16, 2001 was the game to watch of the weekend.
Both teams were ready and raring to go with a large crowd in
attendance. The game was the kick-off event for the tournament and
everyone knew that any team in the tournament had a shot at the title. It
was the Huskies first appearance in the conference championship, after
taking 2nd in the PAC-8 regular season and 9th in the ACHA-West.
The first period
started off with both UCLA and the UW playing tentatively in the first 5
minutes of the game. UCLA
scored first at 16:01 with a long ice-clearing shot that surprised the UW
keeper. But the Huskies did not drop their heads and battled back. At
12:54 the Huskies has a power play chance but it was quickly killed by the
UCLA stingy defense. Then it was UCLA's turn for a man advantage but the
Huskies played tough and took the offensive when Clay Josephy scored at
5:49 while shorthanded. Josephy rushed the puck and jammed it past the
goalie to tie the game. Then at 4:41 the Huskies were on another power
play but they could not convert. The first period ended with a tie, with
both teams skating hard and playing good defense. The Huskies took 12
shots on net, while UCLA took 8 shots on net.
The second period the
Huskies started on a power play but they could not connect to put the puck
in the net. At 16:54 Husky Brett Lawrence made an amazing pass from his
knees to Steve Hyun who popped it in on the far left side. Three minutes
later UCLA returned the favor and scored one from the point.
Not to be outdone, at 11:33 Husky defenseman Bryce Kennedy stepped
over the blue line and his slap shot found the upper right corner of
UCLA's goal. Then at 7:26 Clay Josephy jammed his 2nd goal of the game in,
which was assisted by Sam Kim, to put the Huskies up by two. A minute
later both teams found themselves on 4-on-4 play because of a charge at
Husky goalie Scott Southard and a retaliation penalty that was given to
the Huskies as well. Nothing came of the play as both teams skated evenly.
Then with 28 seconds to go in the second period, UCLA scored again from
the point to bring them within one goal. The second period ended with the
Huskies 17 shots on UCLA and taking 12 shots on net.
The third period was a
hard fought run by both teams. One goal separated the teams and everyone
was playing do-or-die. The Huskies started to see the light as time wound
down and they continued to fight off UCLA rushes. But the lead was lost at
2:37 left in the game when UCLA scored on a breakaway. The remaining
minutes slowly dwindled down as each team play desperately to take the
lead. The end of the game came and the score was tied. The Huskies had
taken 14 shots on net while UCLA took 8 shots on net. The Huskies finished
the game with 3 penalties to UCLA's 4 penalties. It was a great,
hard-hitting, low penalty game, which was played with everyone's heart.
The shoot-out began
with UCLA going first. Husky goalie Scott Southard shut down the first
skater, which gave the Dawgs a huge boost of confidence. Then senior Sam
Kim took it to the UCLA keeper and deked him to score the first point.
Southard shut down the 2nd UCLA shooter, while in turn Freshman Brett
Lawrence scored for the Huskies. UCLA's third skater scored on the
Huskies, but Junior Husky Marty Boyd returned the favor to win the
shootout 3-1. The victory
clinched the PAC-8 semi-finals for the Huskies, at their first showing of
the tournament ever.
