June, 2000

Hey Husky Hockey Fans! This is a just an update on what is going on with Husky Hockey. Please feel free to forward it to whomever you may think is interested. If you would like to join the list, please go to the main page and submit your details via the Fan Mail section on the right hand side.

Husky Hockey 2000-2001 is getting off to a great start. The schedule has been set for next year and it is going to be an exciting and challenging season. We are pumped to compete against UCLA, USC, Stanford, OR, WSU, San Diego, WWU, and Lewis and Clark.... home and away. Please see the web site for the dates and times - www.huskyhockey.net. Our goal to win the PAC-8 is near at hand and we all believe this year will be it!

Coach Dayley and I have been asked to return for the 2000-2001 season and we are excited for the year. We have some strong returning players and some fantastic recruits coming on board. We also have a set second team called Team Husky. They will compete in the Cascade recreational "c" league. We are very excited for the growth of the club. Also, in the near future we hope to add a women's team that would compete with such schools as WSU, Eastern and maybe even some schools from the Southwest, in the ACHA Women's Division. Administratively, we "hired" a General Manager. Jason Boyd is an academic counselor at the UW and was helping players last year on the team in this area. This year he will be the new GM and in charge of all home games, volunteers and interns. This will allow the coaching staff and players to concentrate more on the games instead of being scattered by the responsibilities of throwing a big event each week. Jason has sports management experience, from his college days back east, and he is going to be a great addition to the program.

Returning is Team Physician, Dr. Mark Juhn, DO. He is the team physician for the UW Volleyball team and also travels with the UW National Water polo team. Last year we put his talents to great use in the stitches area. Also returning is Team Equipment Manger, Chris Lusk. We are very excited to bring back his enthusiasm for the game and the team.

We also recently developed internship positions for the team. It is a great win-win situation for the club and students at the UW. We get talented people with a passion for a certain area and they get the practical experience and credits for school.

This summer we have a graphic designer working on our home game program, season tickets and sponsorship marketing materials. In the fall he will work on possibly a team calendar, designs for retail, posters and other stuff. We were lucky to get the top student at the UW in the design department. Our next challenge of course, is to get a print house to help with the costs. If you have any ideas or contacts, we would love to hear from you. Our goal is to look as professional as possible, and by hiring talented interns, we are working towards that.

Also this summer we have a condition coach, from a varsity hockey team back east, that will work with those interested in off-season conditioning. We have several players who were interested in gaining muscle mass so we created a program to help in that area as well as speed, agility and cardiovascularly. We have had great success with one player already who has increased his body mass by 11 pounds. We believe this early preparation will give us a great advantage early on in the season.

In the fall our promotions coordinator intern will start. She is going to help "get the word out" on and off campus about our games and the program, through activities, flyers and other techniques. Her main target will be campus groups, like the Greek system. We are really excited to have her aboard.

We are currently also looking for interns to fill the following spots: - Promotions - summer - Retail Merchandising - fall - Marketing/Sales - summer/fall - Video Photographer (2) - fall - Photographer (almost filled) - fall - Web Developer - summer and fall

If you know anyone interested, and they don't have to be students, in a non-paid experience... let me know.

We are also organizing several different themed game nights. We hope to recognize youth hockey in the area, have Greek Night, Mascot Night (which was a total success last year!) as well as Alumni Weekend. We are also planning a "Skate with Husky Hockey" fundraiser, where people interested in playing a game with the team can pay to participate. Everyone will be split up to play a game at Olympicview.

As everyone knows, affording to play is our biggest challenge. We hope through promotions to have the largest crowds yet. We are selling ad space in the game program and looking for sponsors. We are also looking for joint ventures with business, in which they donate an item, we share logo space and then sell the item in our retail area. If you know of any business that maybe interested in any of the above... I would love to send them a marketing package. We also have a volunteer to present to organization if they wish. Or if you have any other fundraising ideas, we would love to hear from you.

Another thing we are involved with is Sportscapsule.com. It is an company that you send your game footage to, they digitize it, and either post it on-line or make it available on CD-ROM. It is a free service on the front end and on the back end players, families and fans can download and/or edit into highlight clips for $10. They also archive the games so they will be online forever for viewing, editing or whatever.

Well, that just about wraps things up for the summer. Our main mission this summer is to raise $5,000 by September so we can afford the first months bills. We hope to accomplish this by selling ads and getting sponsorships. Again, ideas or support is greatly appreciated.

Hope to hear from you! Go Ice Dawgs!
