  UW vs. OU - November 1, 2003 (Washington 3, Oregon 2)

(Mountlake Terrace, WA) - Penalties cost the Ducks again last night, as
they dropped their second consecutive game to the Huskies last night at
OlympicView Arena.

Power play goals by Adam Senta in the second period and Brett Lawrence
in the third were enough to keep the Ducks at bay.

The two wins gathered by the Huskies this weekend now evens their
record at 4-4 and puts their PAC-8 record at 2-1. The win also puts the
Huskies in position to win their fourth consecutive Athletic Awards I-5 cup,
with a 2-0 series advantage.

This game started quietly, with both teams not scoring in the opening
period. UW goalie Matt Harrow repeatedly turned away a rejuvenated
Ducks attack, which had no answer for the Dawgs defense the night
before.

Senta put the Dawgs on the board with 13 minutes gone in the second
period to break the scoreless tie. Senta put a wrist shot on net while
falling to beat the OU goaltender on his left side, and putting the Huskies
up by a goal. UW defenseman Shayne Sasseen was given credit for the
assist, his 17th on the year.

It took until the very end of the second period for the Ducks to get on the
board. OU forward Jarrod Schechla found a small seam in the Huskies
defense and was able to put a pass from behind the net from OU center
Michael Tornabene and sneak it past Harrow.

The third period was found to be a little more offensive, with the Ducks
and the Huskies trading goals in the first five minutes. Center Brett
Lawrence was able to capitalize on one of the Duck’s penalties and put
the puck past OU goaltender Joe Faglano out in front of the net. The goal
marked the 14th for the captain this season.

Oregon answered quickly, with forward Ted Martin ripping a shot from the
blue line to sneak past Harrow and tying the game at two all.

Not to be outdone, UW assistant captain Sean O’Brien put the game
winner across in the 13th minute with assists from Hadley Ma and Brett
Lawrence. With O’Brien’s goal, it tied him with Lawrence for the team lead
at 14 goals apiece.

With the one goal advantage going into the second half of the second
period, Oregon kept the pressure on with two power plays in the last 12
minutes. However, the effective penalty kill line of the Huskies was able to
preserve the win by keeping the OU power play lines on their end of the
ice.

The closest the Ducks would come to scoring is when in the last two
minutes of the game, Harrow found himself in traffic in front of his own
net. Upon rising back to his skates, he discovered that he was without his
stick. Even without his stick, the Husky defense didn’t allow a shot on him
and cleared the zone, effectively killing any chance that OU had to try to
tie the game.

The Huskies return to California next weekend, with two games against
UCLA at the HealthSouth Arena in El Segundo, California.
