| Kyle Sargent of Eastern
Washington scored four goals and added two
assists as the Eastern Washington Eagles were able to down the Huskies
for the second consecutive night, 13-4 at Olympicview Arena.
The Huskies were out shot again last night, with Eastern
having the shot
advantage of 51-23. Defensive miscues and errant passing again were
the theme for the Huskies, who were no match for the much more
physical Eagles.
“We got out hustled and outplayed,” said
Coach Dayley after the game,
in which the Huskies have evened out their ACHA record at .500, with
PAC8 play beginning next weekend at University of California-Berkeley.
The game started out well for the Huskies, who came
out hustling and
put some shots early on the EWU goal. The team seemed to be
revitalized from last night’s hard loss.
However, Eastern got on the board first with a goal
from Jordan Wallir as
he received a pass from Jimmie Bliss from behind the net, and Wallir was
able to just put it where goalie Matt Harrow wasn’t.
Basically from there on out, the puck and the calls
just seemed to bounce
Eastern’s way the rest of the game.
Two minutes later Eastern picked up another goal as
Josh Curry, the big
goal scorer from the night before, was able to get a pass off as he laid
down on the ice and swiped at the puck. The puck ended up on the blade
of Kyle Sargent, who netted the first of his four goals on the night.
They added another in the first, with Travis Popp redirecting
a shot in
front of the net by Sargent and pushing their advantage to 3-0.
The opportunities did present themselves to the Huskies in the first
stanza, as EWU’s Lyle Parks was sent to the box at 13:33 for slashing.
Eastern was able to effectively turn away the power play for the Dawgs,
who had no answer for the effective EWU penalty kill unit.
Eastern would push two more across the line before
the Dawgs would
finally answer with 10 minutes expired from the second period. Jared
Pisinger was able to get his stick on a rocket from defenseman Michael
Spector and deflect it into the Eastern goal, marking the score at 5-1.
Eastern would answer with four more goals in the period,
and levying
powerful checks to Husky attackers that stymied any chance UW had at
taking a shot on goal. In the closing moments of the second period, the
Huskies started to match the intensity of the EWU checks and started to
roll again.
UW center Adam Senta notched a rebound with assists
being credited to
Charlie Walters and Shayne Sasseen, putting the score at 9-2. A
scoreboard miscue had the Huskies at 3, which the Eastern crowd was
quick to disagree with the display. However, their protests were for not
because within seconds Sean O’Brien made the correction unnecessary
as he collected a pass from Brett Lawrence and found himself alone, in
which he capitalized and put the UW goal count at 3.
The momentum was not carried into the third period,
as the Eagles would
net 4 more goals against Sophomore goaltender Robbie Branom.
The Dawgs did claw until the end, showing perseverance
even though
the outcome of the game had been locked. Team Captain Brett Lawrence
ripped a shot from the blue line which found the back of the net with
5
seconds left to go in the game, putting the goal tally for the Huskies
at 4
on the night.
With the win, Eastern improved to 4-0 on the
season after defeating
Weber State the previous weekend in Spokane, Washington. With the
loss, the Huskies dropped to 2-2, and prepare for their first road trip
to
take on the Golden Bears of California in Berkeley, and San Jose State
at
the San Jose Icoplex.
