| The guiding force
behind the Husky Hockey bench the past four seasons
is 42-year-old Cindy Dayley. She compiled a 72-19 record at the University
of Washington (UW) for a whopping .801 winning percentage. She
directed the team to two Athletic Awards I-5 Club Championship titles,
one Intercollegiate PAC-8 Collegiate Hockey Association (PAC-8) regular
season 1st place finish (2001-2002), and two PAC-8 Championship
Tournament 2nd place finishes. Among 30 teams, Dayley marched the
team up the American Collegiate Hockey Association (ACHA) West
Regional ranking from off the charts into single digits.
The 2002 PAC-8 Conference Coach of the Year and ACHA
DII West Region
Coach of the Year, Dayley spearheaded the greatest ice hockey
turnaround in UW history. The Huskies rebounded from several
disappointing years with a winning percentage of less than .201 to finish
with an astounding .650 after Dayley’s first year. In the last two
years,
Dayley’s teams have won 24 games or more, with winning percentages
of .860 and .964 respectively – a testament to her consistent success.
Adding to her distinguished list of accomplishments,
in 1992 Dayley had
her coaching memorabilia entered into the Hockey Hall of Fame in
Toronto, Canada, for being one of the first women to be a head coach of
a men’s collegiate hockey team at any level. Her 1998-1999 Husky
Hockey coaching jacket and photograph is periodically displayed at the
Hall’s entrance.
A fact even dearer to the head coach’s heart is
that players from the team
have secured their own success regionally and nationally. They range
from First Team All PAC-8, to First Team All ACHA DII West, to ACHA DII
West Player of the Year, to ACHA DII All American, and everything in
between. Even more important to her is the fact that the team has a
100% graduation rate with the majority of the players carrying over 2.5
GPAs.
Dayley also assisted in the development of the American
Collegiate
Hockey Association’s Women’s Division (2000) and currently
serves as the
Intercollegiate PAC-8 Hockey Association Vice President for her second
season in the position. In 2002-2003 she was selected to be the ACHA
West Region Regional Coordinator, after serving on the ACHA West
Ranking Committee for the previous season.
Prior to her appointment to the Husky Hockey team, Dayley
co-founded a
high school girl’s elite program called the 49th Parallel, which
showcase
Western US and Canadian talent to collegiate scouts. The program placed
over 20 girls in varsity Division I and III programs within two years
and
many with substantial scholarships. At the same time she directed the
Seattle Women’s In-Line Hockey team to a 1997 AIRHS National
Championship title after forming a team within four months. From 1995-
1997, Dayley formed the first girls travel rep team in the Seattle area,
which was the first US female team to win the Canadian Lower Female
Hockey League regular season and championship title, with a record of
19-0. The team also took third place in USA Hockey Regional
Championships and placed half the seniors in a collegiate hockey
programs.
A native of Seattle – Washington, Dayley
played on several elite women’s
teams and for a Canadian women’s AAA team that competed in a
Canadian National Women’s AAA Championship. After returning to Seattle,
she played for several men’s recreational check teams before retiring
in
1994. Coach works fulltime for Washington Mutual Bank.
