MOUNTLAKE TERRACE
– Despite their eight power play opportunities, the
Washington Huskies (UW) were unable to convert a goal in the second
game against Weber State University (WSU). In fact, the UW team was
shut-out, a first in the recent history of the team. The WSU Wildcats
swept their second game against the Seattle team, 12-0.
Compared to the previous night’s game, the Saturday’s
meeting between
the two teams was much more controlled and clean. However, the
Wildcats were not fazed by their loss of five players; they still had
the
advantage of a full bench. Their UW opponents, on the other hand, were
skating with two lines of forwards, plus one, and two lines of defense.
The Huskies managed to hold the Weber team scoreless
until midway of
the first period, as the short-squad worked hard to change the previous
night’s result. The Huskies were successful until nine minutes remaining
in the first period, when the Wildcats scored their first goal. Weber
State
scored their second goal on a power play within three minutes, and the
final breakaway goal with 57 seconds on the clock. Weber State out shot
the Huskies 14-6, and was able to net three goals as the Huskies went
scoreless. Penalties in the first period were four minutes for WSU and
two minutes for the Huskies.
The Huskies rallied for the first part of period two,
but the short bench
was a factor as time clicked down on the clock. Despite many drives to
the
net by the UW team, they were unable to score on the WSU team. The
Huskies had many close calls, but the strength of the Wildcats was still
full
force. Husky goaltender Scott Southard improved his game as he made
several impressive saves. At 17:32 Southard managed a split-kick-save
and moments later stopped the puck while he was lying on his chest.
Weber State continued to pound the shots and scored their first of the
period at 15:57. Weber State tallied five penalties in the last 11 minutes
of the game, but the Huskies could not net a goal. Despite WSU’s
mounting penalties, they scored five more times, two of those goals being
shorthanded. Period two ended with the Huskies trailing by nine goals,
and being out shot 24-10. The Weber State team took 10 minutes in
penalties to Washington’s two minutes.
In the third period the Huskies rallied to find their
legs. Their efforts only
produced one shot on the net for the entire period. Meanwhile, the
Wildcats popped in three more goals, one while shorthanded. The Huskies
tallied no penalties while Weber State took four minutes.
The second game of the weekend ended with the
Huskies’ fourth loss of
the season. Weber defeated the UW squad 12-0, out shot the Huskies
55-17, and out penalized the Washington team 18 minutes to four
minutes. The Wildcats scored two power play, seven even strength, and
three shorthanded goals. The Huskies fall to a 7-4-1 overall record in
the
ACHA, and maintain their 6-0 record in the PAC-8 Conference. They will
travel to Spokane on Nov. 22nd to take on Washington State University
and then Eastern Washington on the 23rd.
