MOUNTLAKE TERRACE – The Huskies took to the ice Saturday night,
determined to reclaim the disheartening loss the night before. The
University of Washington had playing hockey in its mind, claiming four
power play goals, two players with hat tricks, and a goalie with the
Huskies’ second shut out this season to beat the Cougars 10-0.

“This is the first time in three games that the boys have connected on
the ice,” said assistant coach Zoe Harris. “The passes were there, the
systems were implemented, and their emotion and drive backed it all up.
They did a great job.”

Neither club gave up a penalty advantage in the first, but the Huskies
didn’t need one. Jamie O’Brien opened the scoring half way into the first
period while Brett Lawrence claimed a second goal for the UW team near
the end of the first period. The Huskies were determined to work the
Cougars.

“Everyone was ready for the game after the loss the night before,” said
UW player Jamie O’Brien. “The few extra players that we had this
weekend made a huge difference in the games, just that 40 seconds of
extra breathing time can be the difference.”

The difference in the game was the Huskies’ unbelievable second period.
At 8:52 into the period on a power play advantage, defender Shayne
Sasseen maneuvered through the Cougar skaters to score the third
Husky goal, assisted by Brett Lawrence and Shaun Lawrence. Shortly
after, WSU switched goalies in attempt to stop the ignited UW team.
Nine seconds after the change, Shaun Lawrence moved in to score
unassisted on a second power play advantage, bringing the Husky tally
to 4-0.

As the Cougars struggled to put a clamp on the UW momentum, it
became evident the Huskies would not, and could not, be stopped.

“We missed three or four easy goals in the first game that would have
changed the tide of the game,” said forward Quintin Schiller. “We were
able to put those away in the second game to put WSU on their heels.”

On its third power play opportunity of the period, UW member Quintin
Schiller netted a fifth goal, assisted by Shaun Lawrence and Brett
Lawrence. Thirty seconds later found Jamie O’Brien securing goal six, on
passes from Sean O’Brien and TJ Anderson, one of Jamie’s personal
highlights.

“I got a break out pass at full speed from my brother and then went one
on one with the WSU defenseman,” said Jamie O’Brien. “And then I went
around him and then made a huge deke to beat the goalie.”

The Cougars had one and one-half minutes to relax before another goal
was demanded of them. Shaun Lawrence scored unassisted once more
to move the UW team up to 7-0. WSU was allowed the last six minutes
of the game to relax.

Period three returned with Cougar goalie Stu Palmer back on the net to
stop the UW barrage. The Huskies were not going to give up. On assists
from Brett Lawrence and Sean O’Brien, Shaun Lawrence netted goal
number eight, also acquiring his first hat trick this season. Husky fans
displayed their appreciation, throwing their hats onto the ice. A few plays
later, Jamie O’Brien procured his own hat trick, assisted by Brett Lawrence
and TJ Anderson. The fans, once more, celebrated the goal.

“Having the crowd throw their hats onto the ice was such a great
feeling,” said Jamie O’Brien.

The feeling of success had not yet left the UW team. On one more power
play opportunity, Matt Ringstad put the tenth and final goal past the WSU
goalie with 35 seconds remaining in the game. Craig Lawrence secured
his shut out, stopping all 24 of the Cougar’s attempts. A very ecstatic UW
team and support group filled the arena with praise.

The Huskies improve to 12-9-1 overall, preparing to take on USC on
January 31 and February 1 on their rink.

“We will prepare for this weekend's game as we always do,” said Harris.
“The opponent doesn't matter. We will work to play our game for 60
minutes.”
