SPOKANE – The University of Washington hockey team traveled to
Cougar territory on Friday for their own “Apple Cup on Ice.” The Huskies
recovered from a double loss last weekend to defeat the Cougars, 7-3.

The UW team is still ranked first in the PAC-8 conference, its domination
apparent on the ice against the WSU team. Before the first minute of the
game was completed, Husky Brett Lawrence, assisted by Shayne
Sasseen, snapped a quick goal to give the UW team an early lead. Three
minutes later found Lawrence assisting Sasseen in a well-placed goal
execution on a power play, increasing the lead by two. The Huskies
continued to skate hard, but the Cougar goaltender did not permit
another goal until the end of the first period. Shaun Lawrence accepted
the power play opportunity to score the third goal for the UW, assisted by
Sasseen. The Huskies were definitely exhibiting their aptitude on the ice.
However, a Husky penalty allowed the Cougars their second power play
advantage of the game with nine second remaining in the first period.
WSU took a mere five seconds to slip the puck into the left side of the net.
The period ended with the Huskies leading 3-1. UW took 20 shots on net
to WSU’s 17 shots. The UW took 4 minutes in penalties plus a 10-minute,
while WSU took 4 minutes.

The Husky talent was still evident in the second period as the team came
out skating hard. The UW defense kept the pressure on as they shut
down several impressive rushes and the Husky goaltenders turned away
increased shots on net. Adam Senta achieved the Husky’s fourth goal
when Charlie Walters forced a turnover on an aggressive fore-check.
Sean O’Brien picked the puck up, fed it to Senta who stepped patiently
around the WSU goalie from left to right. Two minutes later WSU was able
to cut the lead in half by popping the puck in the net on a goalmouth
scramble. When a Husky penalty was called, freshman goalie Matt
Harrow was sent in to further assist the UW team in its winning game.
Harrow starting his playing time by holding the Cougars from converting
the power play. Six minutes remained in the second period when Husky
Quintin Schiller stepped out of the corner and set up Jamie O’Brien who
stuffed the puck home to move the Huskies up to a 5-2 lead. WSU out
shot the UW 20 – 13, as the Cougars took 2 minutes to the Husky’s 4
minutes in penalties.

Period three remained scoreless until the seven-minute mark. UW
member Brett Lawrence scored his second goal of the night when he put
away a shorthanded goal, further elevating the Huskies to a four-goal
lead over WSU. However, 12 seconds later, WSU recovered the goal,
ending its fifth power play opportunity of the game. The Cougars’ quick
retribution would also be their last, as the UW defense remained strong.
The Husky offense was not finished either; Jamie O’Brien put his second
goal of the evening past the WSU goalie with 34 seconds lingering on the
clock. The third period ended with the Huskies taking 11 shots and 4
minutes in penalties, plus a 10-minute, to WSU’s 9 shots and 8 minutes
in penalties.

The Huskies finished the game being out shot 46-44 and out penalized
14–12 minutes. The UW team increased to a 7-0 record in the PAC-8
standings with its 7-3 victory over the Cougars.
