SALT LAKE CITY,
UT – The Steiner Ice Arena hosted the University of Utah
Utes and the University of Washington Huskies as both teams battled to
be on top. The Utes procured the victory, while the Huskies continued
to
have troubles putting one and one together, handing them their second
loss of the weekend, with a score of 5-2.
The UW team succeeded in killing two University of Utah
power play
attempts early in the game, but one of the Utes’ ten shots eventually
got
lucky. With 3:51 left in the first period, the University of Utah acquired
its
first goal off a rebounded puck. The Huskies made nine attempts to score
in the first period, but were unable to score.
Shayne Sasseen opened up the second period to tie with
the Utes
sixteen seconds in as he stepped around several players and then beat
the goalie down low. The Huskies fought off fatigue, and at times the
referee, to keep up with the University of Utah team. Despite taking one
more shot at the net than the Utes, the Huskies were powerless to score
again. After the halfway mark of the second, the Utes moved to 2-1 on
a
five-hole goal. University of Utah ended the period on a power play goal,
going up 3-1.
Period three was heavily in favor of the Utes as they
hustled to put the
Huskies away. At 5:23 into the final period, an University of Utah forward
scored a shorthanded goal, also earning the player a natural hat trick.
The Utes carried the momentum through another six minutes to acquire a
second power play goal, moving the University of Utah team to a 5-1 lead.
The Huskies fought through their evident exhaustion
to earn another
goal. Shaun Lawrence, aided by Brett Lawrence and Jamie O’Brien,
scored
on their own power play with two and one-half minutes of play remaining.
The UW team failed to overtake the Utes, dropping a 5-2 game to the
University of Utah.
The Huskies ended their Utah weekend with two losses,
their overall
ACHA-West record falling to 11-8-1.
