ANAHEIM, CA – Friday night the USC Trojans had beat the Huskies easily,
10-6, but Saturday night found a struggling Trojan team on the verge of
a loss. But the three-time PAC-8 champions pulled a win off, handing the
UW team another loss, 5-3.

USC came out strong once more, dominating the puck in the Husky zone
in the first period. It wasn’t too long into the game before the Huskies
cleaned up their offense during a power play advantage. Five minutes
into the game, TJ Anderson slid the puck in direction of center Brett
Lawrence who broke through the Trojan defense to score five-hole off a
slap shot. This goal gave the Huskies their first lead of the weekend.

The Trojans retaliated by putting on a stronger offensive. The Trojans tied
up the game fifteen seconds after the Husky goal. USC put further
pressure on the Huskies with 6:15 left in the first period, moving into the
lead on a power play goal, as they out shot the Dawgs 13-6.

The Trojans soon discovered that the Huskies were not going to go
quietly. Again, Brett Lawrence took control of the puck from Jamie O’Brien,
on a second power play, to tie with the Trojan team. The UW defense
was also on a mission, successfully shutting down all four power play
opportunities the Trojans had in the second period.

For a third time, Brett Lawrence snapped the puck into the back right
corner of the USC net to move the UW team into a 3-2 lead with 1:48 left
in the period. The goal earned Brett a hat trick, his second hat trick of the
season. The Trojans still doubled their opponent’s shots on net, 12-6.

The Trojans scored first in the third period to tie the game. The Huskies
fought desperately to hold off the USC skaters with many fine chances on
the Trojan keeper. However, the Huskies couldn’t convert on several 2-
on-0s and 2-on-1s. At 13:02, the Trojans went on a five-minute power
play, which was the end of the any UW control.

The Huskies held the Trojans off for two minutes, however managed to
score with 11 minutes left in the game and three minutes left in the power
play. Nine minutes later, another Trojan regular strength goal was
snapped into the top of the net, providing USC with a 5-3 lead. The
Huskies were unable to make another successful attack, as USC again
dominated the shots on net 14-3. The Huskies lose their second PAC-8
game this season, being out shot 39-15.

The Huskies fall to 8-2 in the PAC-8, with the Oregon Ducks coming into
Olympicview Arena for the Athletic Awards I-5 Cup Championship series
on February 7th and 8th.
