MOUNTLAKE TERRACE
– The Huskies succeeded in capturing their first
shut-out of the season, defeating the UCLA Bruins 7-0.
The University of Washington went on to the ice with
ready to defend
their dominance of the PAC-8 conference. The Huskies were offered their
first power play opportunity after 11 minutes of playing time. Forward
Sean O’Brien was able to convert the advantage with a slap shot
assisted by Shayne Sasseen and Eli Troyke. UCLA was soon called on
another penalty before a minute had passed. Again, Washington took
the pleasure to score on the Bruins, this time Matt Ringstad, a new
addition, led the attack to the Husky team. Freshman Ringstad scored
on only his third shift with the Washington team, his first Husky Hockey
goal, assisted by Adam Senta and Charlie Walters, to move the Huskies
up 2-0.
UCLA struggled to set up an offense, only taking four
shots on the
Washington goalie in the first period. The Huskies had one more goal in
them for the first period when defenseman T.J. Anderson slipped the puck
past Bruin Matt Miller with two minutes remaining in the first.
Period two did not favor either team. Six minutes into
period two,
Washington’s Steve Savage passed to teammate Quintin Schiller who
went around the back of the net to assist Jamie O’Brien in scoring
goal
number four for the Huskies. UCLA was offered three power play
opportunities, but was unable to convert against freshman goalie Matt
Harrow. The UW team led 4-0 by the end of the period.
It was period three when the Huskies began to shine,
although it took
nearly 14 minutes for the excitement to begin. Harrow continued to
defend the UW net with the thought of a shutout lurking near. The Husky
offense and defense were ready to make the magic happen. With 6:35
left in the period, Sean O’Brien sent the puck high to add goal
number
five. With three minutes remaining, the UW was called on a high-sticking
penalty, giving the Bruins their fifth and final power play advantage.
Again, Harrow shut down the Bruins with a stunning glove save, while
the Husky offense team assisted Charlie Walters in scoring a short-
handed goal.
“The glove save in the third was definitely a
personal highlight for me,”
said Harrow. “The best part of that save was the two seconds after
when I was the only person who knew I had the puck in my glove.
Then the fans started roaring.”
The intensity mounted as the UW team moved ahead to
6-0.
Defenseman Sean Beveridge was moved up to the attacking
line in the
last minutes to fill in for a missing forward. As the clocked ticked down,
the Huskies remained strong and supportive. With a mere 2.2 seconds
remaining in the game, Beveridge wrapped around the goal to glide the
puck past the Bruins for his first Husky Hockey goal.
“Even though my focus has always been defense,
it feels good to finally
contribute offensively,” said Beveridge. The goal advanced the Huskies
to
a 7-0 game and ended the win. The UW had their shut out.
“As far as the shut out goes I think that if anything
it may have put a
little intensity into the team,” said Harrow, who made 26 saves
throughout the night. “Between the shut out and Beveridge's goal
I
think the guys were more exited after this game than I have seen them
all season.”
