SAN JOSE, CA - The Huskies made their final
trip to Logitech Ice for their
last game of the weekend against the Stanford Cardinals. The UW team
once more took the early lead that ended in its 4-3 win over Stanford.
The game opened with neither team able
to organize itself to take
control of the puck and send it into the net for the first 12 minutes
of the
game. The Huskies looked sloppy after two highly intense games, and
Stanford looked unorganized, yet slightly revitalized, with the return
of
several key players that were missing in previous games. Husky Jamie
O'Brien soon put one into the lower right side of the net to move the
UW
team up first for the third time in the weekend. Stanford was unable to
counter the Husky goal for two periods, as the Huskies dominated in an
overly casual style.
Although period two was scarce of action, period three
was the home to
six goals. Cardinal Bobby Jaros opened period three, sending the puck
just inside the left post. His goal moved the game into a tie at 1-1,
and sparked his team, as well as woke up the Huskies.
The next five minutes were all Huskies, demonstrating
the scoring
abilities of the UW team. Jamie O'Brien scored once more on a beautiful
set up by Shayne Sasseen and Shaun Lawrence. One minute later, Sean
O'Brien added his goal with a quick assist from Randy Shigetani. Fifteen
seconds later, Adam Senta added his own slap shot to move the Huskies
up, 4-1. From there, the Huskies went cold, thinking they could coast
through to the final buzzard. Stanford had other plans.
Cardinals countered with their own goal with ten minutes
remaining in the
period, which fired their team up. Continuing to pressure, Stanford began
to show the Huskies they were not finished yet, nor would they lie down.
With four minutes remaining, one more Stanford goal was sent into the
net. Despite pulling its goalie in the last minute of play, Stanford fell
short of the UW team. The Huskies won the PAC-8 game, 4-3, moving the
record to 6-0.
They traveled back home to prepare for their games
against Weber State
University, which will take place at the Olympicview Arena on Friday and
Saturday.
