MOUNTLAKE TERRACE
– With two wins against the Ducks earlier in the
season, the Huskies took a third win over the University of Oregon, 5-3,
to win the I-5 Cup for the third consecutive season.
“I am excited
about the I-5 Cup win for the third year in a row,” said
assistant Husky coach Zoe Harris. “It is great to win it in front
of our own
crowd for the first time.”
In front of one of the largest crowds this season, the
University of
Washington took the ice ready to defend the cup title. Within three
minutes the Ducks acquired an early lead off of a power play opportunity
to put away one goal. The Huskies needed half of the first period to find
their niche and make an attack on Oregon. Center Brett Lawrence
snapped the puck into the topside of the net assisted by Quintin Schiller
to tie with the Ducks. At 13:09 into the period, the Ducks used a second
power play opportunity to climb ahead of Washington once more. Despite
the Huskies taking 12 shots on the net to Oregon’s six, Washington
was
unable to end the period in a tie.
Charlie Walters got the second period started by scoring
the Huskies’
second goal at 1:38. Walters was assisted my teammates Sean O’Brien
and Randy Shigetani. A mere four minutes later, Husky Jake Kulstad
scored his first goal for the Washington team assisted by Brett Lawrence
to move the Huskies into the lead for the first time of the game.
Washington’s offense kept growing on the momentum as Sean O’Brien
picked the puck up from the blue line to score a shorthanded goal with
11:28 left in the period. However, the power play advantages to the
Ducks were plaguing the Husky defense. With 6:48 remaining, Oregon
scored its third power play goal, the Duck moving in unassisted to snap
the puck beneath the goalie’s leg. The period ended with Washington
holding on to a 4-3 lead, with the shots on net tied at 10 each.
The third period picked up on aggression, but faltered
in attacks on the
net. Four minutes into the final period, freshman Colin
Hutchinson-Flaming scored the Huskies’ fifth goal, assisted by Jamie
O’Brien and Steve Savage. The remainder of the period was full of
roughing penalties, much to the delight of the crowd. Despite both
Oregon and Washington taking an equal ten shots on the net,
Hutchinson-Flaming’s was the only goal of the period. The Huskies
won
their 13th consecutive game against the Ducks, also sealing their grasp
on the I-5 Cup.
“The guys have great respect for the Cup and it
is great to see the new
players take interest too,” Harris said.
Washington moves to 9-2 in the PAC-8 conference and
prepared to battle
for a final win at home on Saturday, once more against the University
of
Oregon Ducks.
