ANAHEIM, CA – Oregon was prepared to show the Huskies their year
ending shoot-out win during the regular season was no fluke. The Ducks
racked up the points and penalties to take third place honors for the
PAC-8 Tournament, defeating Washington 5-1.

Oregon supplied an early battle cry earning them their first goal less
than three minutes into the first period. A barrage of penalties that
appear to be a trademark of the meeting of these two teams made

up most of the rest of the period, with Oregon taking 12 minutes to
Washington’s 10 minutes, with shots on net tied at 11. However to end
the period with 1:38 remaining, Oregon added a second goal, this time
unassisted and short-handed.

In the second period, the Huskies succeeded in fending off all Duck
attacks except one, which was netted at 5:49. The Huskies continued to
search for their finishing techniques, which seem to elude them all
weekend. Washington had 14 shots on the net to the Ducks 13, but
were still unable to light the fire that once fueled this dominant team.
The shots were just not falling and the Huskies scrambled to keep up
with the Oregon’s desire to prove themselves as a major contender in
the conference. Oregon led in penalty minutes, again 12 minutes to 10.

By the third period, a smoky ember is all that remained of the once
blazing Huskies despite out shooting the Ducks by one. Oregon captured
a fourth goal at 6:26 into the period, a power play goal that smirked in
the face of Washington. At 10:26 Husky defenseman Shayne Sasseen
moved up to net his own power play goal for the Huskies in attempts to
regain some composure for Washington. Five minutes remained in the
game when the Ducks once more made a powerful attack during a power
play advantage, putting away their fifth goal of the game at 14:43. The
Ducks win 5-1, are out shot 11-10 in the third and 36-34 in the game,
take 10 minutes in penalties, a DQ for fighting and a 10-minute
misconduct to Washington's 8 minutes in penalties, a DQ for fighting
and a 10-minute misconduct.

The Oregon Ducks secure third place in the 2003 PAC-8 Championship
Tournament with Washington taking fourth place. USC defeated CAL in
the Championship game to earn their fourth consecutive PAC-8
Championship title in as many years.
