The second game
of the weekend between the Oregon Ducks and the
Washington Huskies was much faster and intense than the previous
night. Despite Oregon scoring first as well in this game, the Huskies
presented the talented diversity of their team, beating the Ducks 11-6.
Oregon’s Cory Howard scored on an assist from
teammate Nate Vogel on
a power play five minutes in the first period. Charlie Walters followed
shortly after for the Huskies, tying the score 1-1, with a goal off Oregon’s
Whit Ackerman’s skate.
Oregon answered the attack by settling the tempo down
into something
they could work with. After some coordinated and relaxed passing,
Howard again scored another goal assisted by Vogel.
“Oregon’s team is as they have always been,” said head
coach Cindy
Dayley. “They have a strong team. Oregon has a few players that
can
really make things happen on the ice.”
The Ducks came out with a much stronger and organized
team than they
had the previous night, but the Huskies had the experience of coming
back when they were down, and they rose to this challenge throughout
the night.
UW member Sean O’Brien tied up the game 2-2 at
the beginning of the
second period beginning a 13-minute battle of puck handling. Brother,
Jamie O’Brien, moved the Huskies up to 3-2 with 11 minutes left
by
beating the Duck’s goalie, Gabe Bowersox, low on the ice. Oregon’s
Josh
Friedman answered with an opposing goal three minutes later. One
minute later, sophomore Adam Senta countered the goal after rushing
down the left side and a slap shot to the upper left hand corner of the
net, assisted from Steve Savage. Another minute later, Walters tipped
in
a shot by Sean O’Brien and added to his goal count to bring the
UW team
to 5-3 with six minutes left in the period.
“We had been fighting back and forth all game,
coming from behind and
then losing the lead,” Dayley said. “But after goal 4 and
5, it took
everyone to a different level, which showed our team what we could do.
After that, we did not look back.”
While numerous scuffles were breaking out on the ice,
both teams
continued to test the other’s boundaries and weaknesses. The Ducks
managed to score once more in the second period on a power play,
ending a very intense second period.
Period three also provided the fans with the excitement
they came to see.
The Huskies brought their winning spirit on the ice, ready to take home
a
second win. Brian Smith opened the period with a shorthanded goal
scored from the point and assisted by Shaun and Brett Lawrence. Halfway
into the period, Adam Senta came out of the corner and scored over the
goalie’s shoulder to move the Huskies up to 7-4 as the Oregon fans
increased the volume in rooting their Ducks on. And the Ducks heard the
call.
Oregon’s Nate King and Steve Budke supplied the
Ducks with two goals
only 12 seconds apart. The score was 7-6 as UW took a time-out.
“We have a great rivalry [with Oregon] and this
weekend was no
different,” Dayley said. “We had to really work for the wins
this weekend
and it brought out the heart and soul of the team.”
The heart unquestionably poured out after the brief
game talk. Captain
Brett Lawrence came out to score two beautiful unanswered goals,
leaving three minutes of game time for the Ducks to try to make a
comeback.
“This weekend the team came together and showed
that they could be a
winning team,” said assistant coach Zoe Harris. “We never
gave up and
worked together for the win.”
The Huskies further intensified the win with the two
minutes remaining in
the game as they continued to shell the Duck’s tender. Shaun Lawrence
scored with assists from brother Brett and Jamie O’Brien. Shayne
Sasseen
supplied his own goal with one-minute left in the game, ending the game
11-6.
“It’s good to come out of here with two
wins,” said goalie Scott Southard.
“I’m really happy with how the team played.”
The Husky Hockey team left Oregon with another 2 wins
on their record,
opening their season to a 3-0 record in the ACHA and 2-0 in PAC-8
Conference play. The Huskies will face Cal-Berkeley this weekend at
Olympicview Arena in Mountlake Terrace, Friday night at 9:45pm and
Saturday night at 10:00pm.
