After a long bus ride, the University of Washington took the ice for their
first away game. The Ducks shocked the Huskies with a roll-in goal in the
first 12 seconds of the game. However, this was exactly what the UW
team needed to get into the game. Eight minutes later, the Huskies
answered the Oregon battle cry and held the Ducks from scoring the rest
of the first period.

“When they scored that odd goal we did not give up and kept going,” said
UW head coach Cindy Dayley. “Once it was tied up I knew we were going
to win the game.”

Goals by T.J. Anderson, Brett Lawrence and Jamie O’Brien brought the
score to 3-1 at the end of period one. The Huskies were feeling pumped
and ready for the second period. No one anticipated the disaster that was
period two.

The referees kept their whistles warm from the beginning of the second
period. The UW team played shorthanded for 15 of the 20-minute period.
Twelve of those minutes the Huskies were down two men. Junior forward
Shayne Sasseen took advantage of a rare three-on-three play to score on
a breakaway by sending the puck into the upper right corner of the net.
Goalie Scott Southard was then put to the test of his goal-tending abilities
as the Oregon team took advantage of the UW penalties.

“There were times when they were skating hard and really took it to us,”
Southard said.

Duck Justin Keeland took the last five minutes of the second period to
bring the Oregon team up two more points, ending the grueling period, 4-
3. Only five minutes of the period were played full-strength, yet just two
goals were scored on the Huskies.

After recovering from the second period, the Huskies were ready to show
the Ducks what they were made of. Shaun Lawrence opened up the
scoring in the third period within seven minutes to increase the Husky
lead by two. Senior forward Steve Savage followed shortly after, further
frustrating the Oregon team by scoring a garbage goal in front of the net.

“I think we’ve improved a lot since last week,” Southard said. “It’s good
to see the team come together and bond. It’s one step and I’m glad we
took it.”

The team definitely bonded, allowing the Ducks only three shots at the
net, compared the 14 shots the UW took on the Oregon net in the third
period. The Ducks did manage to score on a penalty shot, awarded for a
takedown, which ended up being the last time of the game. With two
minutes remaining, Sean O’Brien scored in the upper right side of the goal
to end the game 7-4.

“Oregon is what we expected for the most part,” Dayley said. “However,
at this level of the game, teams can change drastically from year to year
depending on the new students that come in.”
