SPOKANE – The fire that lit the determination
under the Huskies at the
beginning of the game was soon extinguished by the offense of the
Eastern Washington Eagles. The Eagles out-hustled and out-skated the
UW team to a Husky 6-2 loss.
The UW team came out fast and furious Saturday though
they were short
three members of its bench. They were determined to show EWU what
they could still accomplish their goals.
The Huskies skated for ten minutes before Charlie Walters
scored the first
goal of the game on a power play, assisted by Jamie O’Brien. The
UW
team worked well to keep all Eagle attempts uneventful as they turned
away, time and time again, impressive rushes by EWU. The Eagles’
solid
play soon paid off, tying the game at 1-1 on a power play with 1:12 left
in
the first period. The Eagles out shot the Huskies 11-8. Both teams took
8
minutes in penalties.
Despite two power play opportunities in the second,
the UW team was
unable to find its second goal. EWU worked its way to a 3-1 lead, its
third
goal acquired on a shorthanded attack with 11:36 left on the clock as
the
Huskies struggled to find their game. Two minutes later, Husky forward
Brett Lawrence recaptured the goal by snapping the puck in the upper
right corner, cutting the Eagle lead to one. The Huskies and Eagles tied
in
shots taken, with 11 each, with EWU tallying a lone 6 minutes in
penalties.
By the third period, EWU had taken its toll on the weary
Husky legs, which
resulted in slopped defensive play. The Eagles were able to score three
times within the first 11 minutes of the third period. EWU’s disciplined
play
offensively and defensively paid off as the Huskies scrambled to keep
in
the game within reach.
“We're struggling right now, and it seems that
when we get in hole we
have a difficult time getting ourselves out,” said Husky goalie
Scott
Southard.
The fading UW team was unable to retaliate on the EWU
goalie, as the
Eagles out shot the Huskies 9-8 and out penalized them 12 minutes to 8
minutes in the third period.
The Huskies out shot the Eagles 30-28 as the Eagles
out penalized the
Huskies 26 to 16 minutes. The UW team falls to an overall ACHA record
of
8-5-1 and will have its next game at the Olympicview Arena on December
6th against UCLA.
