MOUNTLAKE TERRACE – The 2003 Husky Hockey game opener found a
depleted University of Washington (UW) team suffering a disheartening
8-1 loss to the Eastern Washington University (EWU) Eagles.

“The team knew going into the weekend we were going to have a hard
road ahead of us because we had so many players out with injuries,”
said Husky head coach Cindy Dayley.

With only three defenders and two offensive lines, the Huskies were
plagued by the Eagle’s advantage of a full bench.

EWU started their drive two minutes in when they battled through two
UW defenders unassisted to score the first goal. The Eagles added goal
two six minutes later on a two-on-two attack. The Eagles also handed
out four power-play opportunities in the first period, but the Huskies
were unable to convert. Though the UW team’s energy is depleting, the
Huskies battled through the rest of the period to earn a well-deserved
break.

Period two encountered the Huskies rested after a grueling first period.
Two minutes into the second Brett Lawrence scored on a one-on-two
screen shot to bring the UW team within one point of the Eagles. The
Huskies battled the EWU team, keeping five of the Eagles’ six shots out
of the net. Despite the effort of the UW team and the Eagles’ eight
minutes in penalties, the Huskies were unable to acquire a second goal.
EWU was able to trickle in their third goal with 57 second remaining in
the second period.

Period three was undeniably the Eagles’ period, the 20-member EWU
team taking its toll on the short-handed Huskies. With 16:44 left in the
period, the Eagles began their final attack with their fourth goal of the
game. Thirty seconds later another EWU skater swooped in unassisted
to increase the Eagle lead by four. The Huskies managed to hold their
opponents off for nine more minutes before the Eagles began the
onslaught.

“We lost steam in the third and the flood gates opened for Eastern,”
Dayley said. “They took control of the scoreboard.”

Within 22 seconds of each other, the Eagles slipped in two more goals
jumping to a 7-1 lead. EWU had one more goal to add with a minute and
one-half left in the game, ending the Huskies’ 2003 game opener with a
1-8 loss.

“We did not have the final outcome we had hoped for, but the team
pulled together and played a very good game,” Dayley said. “We just
could not put the puck in the net even though we had many exciting
chances.”

The loss dropped the UW team to a 10-6-1 overall record.
