ANAHEIM, CA - Despite the Huskies' previous
three defeats of the CAL-
Berkeley squad, the high energy Golden Bears shut down Washington in
the first round of the PAC-8 tournament, 4-1, even after being out shot
42-26.
Both teams desperately tried to open up the scoring
column and gain the
first surge of momentum in the first period. However, repeated penalties
prevented any momentum for either team. CAL had three power play
opportunities to Washington’s one, all which were unsuccessful.
The first
period ended with no score and the Huskies out shooting the Golden
Bears 14-11.
In the second period the Huskies poured on the pressure
but were
unable to sneak the puck past the stingy CAL goalie despite bombarding
him over and over again. Both teams battled for the first goal and at
16:50 the Golden Bears scored, which injected the team with newfound
adrenaline. Then, a mere 30 seconds later CAL scored again. The Huskies
worked hard for stronger offensive drives and to control the game, but
the CAL defense worked to their full potential to drain Washington’s
fuel.
The Huskies remained netless at the end of a second 20 minutes despite
out shooting the Golden Bears 19-9.
Washington came onto the ice in the third period determined
to catch up
and pass their opponent. However, the Golden Bears took advantage of
their lead by continuing with their run and gun style, and aggressive
fore-check. In turn, CAL slapped in an unassisted short-handed goal with
13 minutes remaining in the game. A few moments later Husky forward
Shaun Lawrence scored off a pass from Charlie Walters to finish off the
power play advantage and earning Washington’s first goal at 7:20
into
the period. However, the Golden Bears continued with their un-ending
energy and grit for the rest of the game. CAL snapped in a fourth goal
with 8:47 remaining in the game, moving them into a 4-1 lead over
Washington.
The final moments of the game were just as intense as
the rest of the
game. CAL’s pressure earned them several penalties, which Washington
decided to try to take advantage of. They pulled Husky tender Craig
Lawrence in the final two and one-half minutes of the game to make a
final attack on the CAL-Berkeley team with 1- and 2-man advantages, but
the attempts were futile. The Huskies then earned two final minute
frustration penalties, which ended any chance on power play advantages.
The Golden Bears put away the Huskies 4-1 despite being
out shot 12-3
in the third period, and 42-26 for the entire game. CAL sends Washington
packing back to battle Oregon for third place honors, while the Golden
Bears head to the championship round against No. 1 ranked USC.
