BERKELEY, CA - The CAL-Berkeley Golden Bears still were no match for
the University of Washington Huskies. Although the Golden Bears had
home- ice advantage at the over-sized Iceland rink, the Huskies powered
through for their third win against the Berkeley team, 4-3.

The UW team came out hot in the first period, pressing hard, and hitting
hard at every moment. Assisted by Husky Brian Smith, forward Jamie
O'Brien rolled the puck up and over the CAL goalie's shoulder seven
minutes into the game, giving the Huskies the leading edge. The game
then went silent until a Golden Bear player was called on a five-minute
kneeing penalty, giving the Huskies their second power play advantage
of the game. With a minute left in the period, Shayne Sasseen capitalized
on the five-on-four power play by scoring backdoor on a one-timer. The
first period ends with the two-goal lead for the UW team.

The second period proved uneventful for the Huskies, despite their 12
shots on the net. Berkeley's keeper remained tough as CAL's Sean Haq
managed to score on a slap shot goal at the beginning of the period. The
play continued to go back and forth, with both teams throwing everything
they had on the ice. The Berkeley fans, few yet loud, were also
entertaining as the game became more urgent.

Period three was an intense, fast-paced period. The Golden Bears tied the
game 2-2 right off the bat. However, the Huskies would have none of it
and answered with fierce efforts. Seventeen seconds after the Berkeley
goal, Husky Sean Lawrence, assisted by Brett Lawrence and Steve
Savage, put the puck low and through the goalie's legs to gain the lead
once more. Defenseman Eli Troyke added to the attack by taking the puck
from the in-zone face-off for a slap shot goal, putting the Huskies up by
two.

The Golden Bears were not finished yet. The cheering group stepped up
their vocal support, thus picking up their team. With six minutes
remaining, the Berkeley team responded, rallied back and advanced on
the Huskies by putting in a power play goal. However, the UW team
stayed warm enough, and alert enough, to keep any further attacks from
the Golden Bears from reaching the goal. The Huskies won their first game
of the weekend, 4-3.

The UW team moved up to 5-0 in the PAC-8 standings as they went back
to their hotel to freshen up for their next game against San Jose State.
