Husky Hockey played their first home game
of the season on Saturday night and beat Walla Walla College 21-1.
The first goal was scored by Marty Boyd twelve seconds into the first when
he stepped over the blue line and his slap shot found the back of the net.
Forty seconds later Husky goalie Scott Southard came up with a big 1-on1
save from one of the Walla Walla Wolf Pack’s most impressive drives of
the night. At 16:02 Shaun Lawrence, from behind the net, set up Matt
Carlson who smacked the puck home. At 9:30 the Huskies found themselves on
a power play. Marty Boyd picked up a bouncing puck on the left side
of the goal, passed it to Shaun Lawrence who scored his first Husky Hockey
when his slap shot 3 feet out found the back of the net. At 8:53
Eric Sato took a slap shot from the blue line and Brian Mead tipped it in
from in front of the net. Then at 7:34 Charlie Walters scored his first
Husky Hockey goal when he beat the goalie near side. At 6:37 Brett
Lawrence’s slap shot bounced out from the goalie and Matt Carlson picked
up the rebound and put it in the back of the net. At 5:18 Brett Lawrence
scored while the Huskies were short handed. Then Paul Margolis scored
again while short handed off of a slap shot from Adam Senta. Then Walla
Walla scored their first and only goal with 15 seconds remaining in the
first period on a power play.
The second period started off with a slew of penalties for both teams in
the first ten minutes of the game. Then at 10:44 Husky Brett Lawrence beat
the goalie and scored. At 10:48 Husky goalie Rick Hewitt entered the game
and swapped places with Scott Southard. The period continued with many
4-on-4 and 4-on-3 play. At 4:11 Brian Smith set up Matt Carlson who
backhanded the puck into the goal. With 55 seconds remaining, Brett
Lawrence made a backhand move to the right and around the goalie to score.
Then 2 seconds later, with 3-on-3 play, Bryce Kennedy and Brett Lawrence
set up Matt Carlson with 3 quick passes, who scored to finish off the
second period.
The third period defensemen Bryce Kennedy’s cleanly found the back of
the net with a low snap shot. Then at 11:03 Adam Senta scored backdoor
from a pass from Brett Lawrence, his first Husky Hockey goal. Brett
Lawrence then scored at 8:04 while shorthanded. The Huskies did not score
on a power play at 7:01 but Shawn Lawrence deflected in a slap shot from
Brian Smith moments later. Adam Senta scored again at 3:15 with a
turn around slap shot on 4-on-4 play. At 3:15 Brian Mead rushed down
the right side of the ice and passed in front of the net where Marty Boyd
jammed it home. Seven seconds later on the exact same play, Boyd set up
Mead for the goal. Then Paul Margolis stick handled around the
goalie to score at 1:50. The final goal of the game was scored at 1:04
when Cody Engelke assisted Charlie Walters.
Final Game Stats:
The Huskies took 71 shots on net compared to Walla Walla’s 6 shots.
The Huskies had 20 minutes in penalties to Walla Walla’s 10 minutes.
Brett Lawrence had 2 shorthanded goalies, 2 regular strength goals and 3
assists. Matt Carlson had 3 goals and 3 assists. Shaun Lawrence had 1
power play goal, 1 regular strength goal and 3 assists. Brian Mead had 2
goals and 1 assist. Husky defense lead the plus-minus points with
blue-liner Sean O’Brien with plus 13 points, and Brian Smith with plus
12 points.
