Game #1 Report – Friday Nov. 9th: 
Huskies 10, WSU 3

The Huskies were given an instant power play for the first two minutes of the game for WSU’s delay of game. The Cougars failed to have a backup goaltender ready and on the bench for the start of the game. WSU killed the penalty and the two teams bantered back and forth for the first five minutes of the game. At 13:01 Shaun Lawrence picked up a loose puck from neutral zone face off and popped the puck into WSU’s zone. Matt Carlson zipped in and picked the puck up and shot it over the WSU’s goalies’ glove hand. It was Carlson’s first goal of three for the weekend 2-game series. The Huskies scored again, this time on a power play, when Brian Smith set up defensive partner, Sean O’Brien, who scored in lower right corner. Then at 6:07, Charlie Walters came out of the WSU’s corner, passed it to Sean O’Brien on the point, whose one-time slap shot was tipped in by Brian Mead. Then at 5:51 Sean O’Brien stepped out of the corner with two spin moves and passed it to Charlie Walters who scored while wide open. And, the final goal in the first period for the Huskies was at 4:49 when Brett Lawrence jammed the puck in the 5-hole from a pass from Eric Sato. The first period ended with the Huskies leading 5-0. The Huskies took 6 minutes in penalties while WSU took 10 minutes in penalties. The Huskies out shot WSU 31 to 5.

The second period the Huskies were hampered by penalties. They managed to kill off one of several 5-on-3 power plays for WSU, but were scored on at 13:25 from a shot from the point. WSU scored again, this time on a power play, at 8:41. The Huskies finally put one in the back of the net when they were shorthanded. Matt Carlson passed to Brett Lawrence who stepped left to right and around a downed goalie. At 1:21 the Huskies and Cougars where playing 4-on-3 and WSU scored their third and final goal of the game. Then, with 28 seconds to go in the second period, while shorthanded, Shaun Lawrence fore checked WSU, stole the puck and scored five-hole. The period ended with the Huskies leading 8-3. Husky Hockey took 10 minutes in penalties, while WSU took 6 minutes in penalties. WSU out shot the Huskies 23 to 16.

The Huskies scored within the first 2 minutes of the third period when Shaun Lawrence, who was in the high slot, fed the puck to Matt Carlson who scored while posted on the far left corner. The Huskies continued to take penalties and continued to kill them as well. At 12:07 Adam Senta stepped over the blue line, avoided a check, skated down the left side and took a slap shot that found the lower right corner. For the last four minutes of the game the Huskies found themselves penalize and playing shorthanded, 5-on-3, but were able to kill off the time without being scored on. In the third period the Huskies had 12 minutes of penalties to WSU’s 8 minutes. The Huskies out shot WSU 17-10. The game ended with the Huskies winning 10-3.

Final Game Stats:
Shaun Lawrence had 2 goals and 3 assists, and Matt Carlson and Sean O’Brien had 2 goals and 2 assists each. The Huskies took 28 minutes, while WSU took 24 minutes in penalties. The Huskies took 74 shots to WSU 38 shots on net.
