UW vs USC - Home

Game 2 - Saturday October 27, 2001
Huskies 4, USC 3

Game two between Husky Hockey and the USC Trojans started out with both teams fighting hard to get up on the scoreboard first. Both teams made strong rushes and both goalies came up big. It was not until 9:18 left in the first period when the puck was finally put in the back of the net. Husky forward Charlie Walters scored, after receiving a broken back-pass from Paul Margolis, when he took a slap shot on the far left side. While the USC goalie took a penalty for slashing after the goal was scored, the Huskies also took a penalty when the fans celebrated the goal by throwing a fish (Chinook Salmon) on the ice.  The first period ended with the Huskies leading 1-0, and USC taking 13 shots to the UW’s 12 shots on net. The Huskies took 8 minutes in penalties and USC took 6 minutes in penalties.

The second period started out with the Huskies shorthanded because of 1st period penalty that ran over into the second period, and the Trojans capitalized by scoring a goal at 18:48. The penalties continued to mount as both teams took the physical game to its limits.  The Huskies lost two players during this period, one with a concussion from the game the night before and another with a major leg injury. In the last minutes of the period the Huskies found themselves shorthanded again, but this time with 5-on-3 play. The Trojans were able to put the puck away at 5:49 on the 2-man advantage power play. The period ended with USC leading 2-1 and out shooting the Huskies 15-7. USC took 6 minutes in penalties plus a 5-minute penalty for fighting. The Huskies took 10 minutes in penalties.

In the third period the Huskies came out of the gate with new determination. Penalties continued to mount for both teams and at 17:46 Brian Smith scored to tie the game for the Huskies on 4-on-4 play. Matt Carlson, who was posted in the corner, set up Smith in front of the net.  Husky goalie, Scott Southard, made the big saves throughout the third period as USC continued to bombard him with shots. Then at 8:11 USC took an un-sportsmanlike penalty for intentionally shooting the puck into the Husky bench and hitting the team physician. The Huskies capitalized on the power play advantage when Randy Shigetani passed to Matt Carlson, who then set up Brett Lawrence in front of the net. Lawrence scored at 7:20 to put the Huskies up by one goal. Then with less than 3 minutes left in the game, on 4-on-4 play, Shaun Laurence set up Randy Shigetani in front of the net, who then shot the puck in the upper left hand corner of the goal to put the Huskies up by two points. It was Mr. Shigetani’s first Husky Hockey goal. With less than one minute to go in the game the Huskies took two back-to-back penalties, which allowed USC to have a 5-on-3 power play once again. With 31 seconds to go in the game the Trojans were able to score on a screened shot to put them one point closer to tying the game. But the time on the clock was running out. With big saves by the Husky goaltender Scott Southard, who saved 13 shots during the third period by USC, compared to 7 shots the UW put on the Trojan tender, the game ended and the Huskies tallying their second win over the Trojans for the weekend with a score of 4-3.
