vs USC - Home
Game 1 - Friday October 26, 2001
Huskies 4, USC 1
In only their third week of hockey action
and their fourth game of the season, Husky Hockey takes down the USC
Trojans who were enjoying a 2 year undefeated run in the PAC-8 plus two
consecutive PAC-8 titles. With a winning score of 4-1, the Huskies ended
USC’s sweet streak, with both team’s first PAC-8 game of the season.
Despite having several nagging injuries, the Huskies played through the
pain. The Dawgs were able to score three times on power plays, plus one
empty net goal, were able to shut down the Trojan's power plays, despite
struggling with special teams against the Trojans in the past.
Friday night’s games started out fast and furious with both teams making
strong rushes. At 13:58 USC went on a power play but the Huskies killed
the time on the clock and played on. Then at 11:31 the teams battled
4-on-4, but neither team was able to score. The Husky goalie Scott
Southard played strong by stopping several excellent shots and strong
rushes. The Huskies took two more penalties in the first period but killed
both power play attempts by the Trojans. The first period ended in a 0-0
tie.
The second period the Huskies picked up the pace. The Huskies went on a
power play at 17:32 but could not convert. The Trojans went up on the
board first at 9:43, but the Huskies went on a power play again at 9:01
and scored to tie the game at 7:20 when Shaun Lawrence jammed the puck
into the net at a goalmouth scramble. The Huskies found themselves on a
power play at 3:32 but could not convert. The second period ended with a
1-1 tie.
In the third period the Huskies came out with more resolve than ever. They
found themselves on a power play again at 19:12 and at 17:32 captain Brian
Mead scored from in front of the net. The Huskies scored again at 13:47 to
go up by 2 goals on another power play advantage. This time Shaun Lawrence
set up Brett Lawrence with a give and go pass, which Brett put in the back
of the net. Then at 12:41 USC went on a power play but could not
convert against the stingy UW penalty kill squad. 4-on-4 action at 10:36
resulted in no goals and still more phenomenal play by goalie Scott
Southard who continued to stand on his head. The Husky defense were
picking up their men in front of the net, allowing Southard to see all the
shots coming at him. He continued to steal the game down to the last
seconds with big saves and one of his best games of his career. With the
last few minutes left in the game USC pulled their goalie. And then
with only 11 seconds to go Brett Lawrence fore-checked in the neutral
zone, stole the puck and shot it into the net. The game ended with the
Huskies beating USC with a 4-1 victory.
