Game Report
UW vs USC - Away

Game 1 - Friday November 30, 2001
Huskies 8, USC 3

The Huskies stepped into the Trojan home rink ready for another great match with USC. With the home court advantage, the campus cable station and the CAL-Fullerton radio station on hand, the Trojans came out strong in the first few plays of the game. However, at 18:23 Shaun Lawrence scored his first of two goals on the night from a pass from Brett Lawrence.  The game then started going back and forth with good rushes by both teams. USC went on the board to tie the game at 13.49. Then a few seconds later at 12:32 Brian Mead set up Brett Lawrence who wrapped the puck around the front of the goalie from left to right. It was his first of three goals for the night, and second point of eight for the game. The Huskies scored again at 10:38 when Eric Sato scored in the far right corner of the net. The game continued with great speed and little physicality by either teams. At 8:42 Shaun Lawrence scored his second goal when he stepped over the blue line and his slap shot found the lower right corner. Then at 7:20, on a 2-on-1 play, Brett Lawrence scored on a slap shot to the upper right corner. USC took the first and only penalty of the first period at 4:41 but did not allow the Huskies to convert. The period ended with the Huskies leading 5-1. USC had 2 minutes in penalties, while the Huskies tallied none. Each team took 11 shots on net.

The second period both teams picked up the physical play with big hits in each zone. The Huskies took a penalty at 12:22 but did not allow USC to score. At 6:53 Brett Lawrence scored his third goal of the night when he spun around in the high slot and scored on the goalie that never saw the puck. USC scored with 1:15 remaining in the second period on a goal mouth scramble. The Huskies took 10 shots to USC’s 16 shots on net. The Huskies had the loan 2 minute penalty in the second.

The third period USC came out hitting hard in the first minutes of the period. The Huskies picked up the pace and matched them check for check. The Trojans went up on the board first at 16:11 on a power play. USC continued to bombarded the Husky goalie, Scott Southard, who came up big time and time again. The UW defense also continued to be stingy and disallowed odd-man rushes. Paul Margolis then scored at 10:10 when he jammed the puck in the lower corner, assisted by Brett Lawrence. The Matt Carlson scored, from assist from Brett Lawrence, at 1:56 to take the tally up to 8 goals. But USC continued to battle and put the puck in the net with 32 seconds to go on 4-on-4 play. USC out shot the Huskies 23-13. UW had 6 minutes in penalties to USC’s 4 minutes. The game ended with the Huskies winning 8-3.
