Huskies 6, UCLA 1
The Huskies third game of the weekend was
played with a shorter squad due to injuries and a DQ. The first period the
teams battled back and forth with strong chances by both teams. The first
goal was at 11:53 when Charlie Walters tipped in a shot by Brian Mead. At
5:27, on a 5-on-3 advantage for the Huskies, Shaun Lawrence took the
opponent’s zone, passed to Brett Lawrence who 1-timed the puck to Sean
O’Brien who 1-timed the puck from the far left side into the lower left
corner. Then at 3:00 Shaun Lawrence scored off a rebound on a turn-around
slap shot. The first period ended with the Huskies leading 3-0. The
Huskies took 16 shots on net to UCLA’s 8 shots on net. UCLA had 6 minutes
in penalties to the Husky’s 2 minutes.
The second period the Husky’s fatigue was noticeable. The team came out
flat and struggled to keep their shot count high on UCLA’s keeper. Husky
Brett Lawrence scored the lone goal of the second period at 16:56 on a
power play. The Huskies took 11 shots on net to UCLA’s 11 shots on net.
Both teams took 4 minutes in penalties.
In the third period UCLA scored immediately on a power play at 19:01. It
then took the Huskies almost twelve minutes to put the puck in the net
when at 7:51 Marty Boyd scored. The Husky defense continued to shut down
good rushes as the team tried to pick up the pace. The final goal of the
game was scored when Sean Beveridge took a slap shot, the rebound was
collected by Charlie Walters who put the puck in the upper right corner of
the net. The Huskies collected their third win of the weekend with a score
of 6-1. UW took 25 shots on net to UCLA’s 13 shots on net. UCLA had 2
minutes in penalties to the Husky’s 6 minutes.
