Huskies 16, UCLA 1
The Huskies first of two games with UCLA
was a speedy and feisty match. UCLA put on the jets immediately, however
the Huskies went up on the score board two minutes into the first period.
Brian Mead fed Marty Boyd the puck on a rush to the net and he tipped it
into the net. It would be Boyd’s first of three on the night. The Huskies
took a penalty at 14:54 but killed the power play. UCLA continued with a
few good rushes but the UW defense played strong with the help of the
forwards. At 9:36 Bryce Kennedy received a pass from defensive partner
Randy Shiggetani. He took a slap shot, which found the lower corner. It
was Kennedy’s first of three goals for the night. UCLA went on a power
play at 8:20 but the Huskies killed the man-advantage play. Then at 5:57
Marty Boyd fed Charlie Walters, who had a water-bottle-shot off his slap
shot, his first of two for the night. The first period the Huskies took 27
shots on net to UCLA’s 7. Each team 2 minutes in penalties.
The second period the Huskies continued
to dominate and scored immediately on a power play at 18:25 when Shaun
Lawrence collected a rebound and his slap shot found the back of the net.
Then at 17:20 Matt Carlson set up Brett Lawrence, who scored while falling
down and wrapping the puck around the front of the goalie. Then at 16:26
Bryce Kennedy jumped into the play, stole the puck on the fore check and
scored while shooting low on the ice. And, the final goal for the Huskies
in the second period was scored by Charlie Walters when he walked out of
the corner and took a slap shot that found the upper left corner.
The Huskies took 24 shots to UCLA 2 shots
on net. The Huskies took 6 minutes in penalties to UCLA’s 4 minutes. Husky
Adam Senta, after being cup-checked several times, received a disqualified
for butt ending.
The third period started to get more
physical at time continued on. The Husky defensive squad made some bit
hits and continued to be stingy and pass well. The Huskies scored at
18:48, while shorthanded, when Brett Lawrence fore checked, stole the
puck, and scored right to left on the ice and around the goalie. Brian
Mead fed Bryce Kennedy at 14:08 who scored 5-hole. Then Kennedy scored
again at 13:43 from a slap shot from the point. He tallied the first hat
trick for the defensive squad. At 11:03 Eric Sato scored from a pass from
Brian Smith when he tipped the puck in the far right corner. At 8:10, on
4-on-4 play, Sean O’Brien beat the defensemen on the blue line and fed
Brian Mead the puck who was rushing down the right side and tipped the
puck in. At 5:40 Charlie Walters fed Marty Boyd who scored on the right
side. Then ten seconds later Boyd scored again, from a pass from Randy
Shigetani, when he jammed the puck lower left side, a hat trick for Boyd.
At 3:32 Matt Carlson passed to Shaun Lawrence, who fed it back to Carlson
who scored on a slow roller into the net. And, the final goal for the
Huskies was put in by Eric Sato from a pass from Brett Lawrence. UCLA
then scored their one and only goal with 41 seconds left in the game. The
Huskies took 17 shots on net to UCLA’s 5 shots. UCLA hat 10 minutes in
penalties to UW’s 4. The Huskies won the game 16-1.

Of Note: Bryce Kennedy and Marty Boyd had
hat tricks for the night, plus Boyd had 2 assists.
