Game Report

UW vs Stanford - Away
Game #1 Report – Friday Nov. 2nd:
Huskies 7, Stanford 3

Husky Hockey came out of the gate in the first period against Stanford with noticeable flight-legs. The team struggled to come together for their normal solid team effort, but were able to score first on a power play when Bryce Kennedy’s slap shot bounced off Shaun Lawrence’s skate and right to Matt Carlson. Carlson put the puck in the back of the net at 12:37 to put the Huskies up by one. Then at 9:15 Marty Boyd broke into the offensive zone, fed Brian Mead the puck, who beat the goalie on the lower right side. Stanford scored their first goal at 7:36 when they were short handed. The first period ended with the Huskies leading 2-1.

The second period still looked rough for the Huskies. However, they scored early in the period at 18:09 when Sean Beveridge’s slap shot was rebounded by Sean O’Brien, who put the puck over a downed goalie. Then, at 15:12 Brett Lawrence scored off double rebound shots from Matt Carlson and Shaun Lawrence. But Stanford continued to put the pressure on, and scored less than a minute later. The Stanford goalie continued to stand on his head to stop the Husky’s attempts, time and time again. And to end the period, Stanford scored their second goal in a row at 1:15. The period ended with the Huskies leading 4-3.

The third period the Husky team defense stepped up and started shutting down the fast and impressive rushes by Stanford. At 18:54 Matt Carlson scored again on a one-timer. The Huskies continued to shoot, but the stingy Stanford defense either got in the way of the shots on net or the goalie made big saves. Finally at 6:24 Paul Margolis took the offensive zone, dished the puck off just as he took a big hit, as his line-mate Sean O’Brien went one-on-one with the goalie and beat him to the lower corner. And to finish off the game, Marty Boyd won a face-off in the offensive zone, dropped the puck back to Brian Smith, who’s slap shot on net was tipped in the upper left side by Boyd who was streaking to the net. The game ended with the Huskies winning 7-3.
