Oregon Ducks - Home
Game #2 Report – Saturday Nov. 17th:
Huskies 5, Oregon 3
The first period the Huskies came out sluggish and failed to score on two
power plays. Oregon went up on a 2-man advantage but also failed to put
the puck away. The Huskies continued a trend from the night before,
missing the net completely or hitting the goal tender square in the chest.
Then the Ducks scored their first goal at 9:31. They scored again at 1:15
to end the first period with a 2-goal lead. The Huskies took 12 shots on
net to the Ducks’ 11 shots. The Huskies and Ducks matched in penalties
with 8 minutes apiece.
In the second period the Huskies came out with new resolve. Brett Lawrence
also scored a natural hat trick in this period to put the Huskies up by
one goal. The first goal was at 15:36 when Lawrence stepped out of the
corner and behind the net. He then came back to the near post and slid the
puck under the goaltender’s leg pad. At 6:22 Sean O’Brien took at slap
shot, which hit Lawrence in the back of the leg. He then turned around,
took to steps and put the puck in the upper right hand corner of the net.
Brett Lawrence’s third goal was scored when he and Matt Carlson sped into
Oregon’s zone on a 2-on-1. Carlson popped the puck over the defensemen’s
extended stick to Lawrence, who one-timed the puck into the upper right
hand corner. The second period ended with the Huskies leading 3-2 and out
shooting the Ducks 20 to 6. The Huskies took no penalties, while Oregon
took 4 minutes.
The third period was a gruesome fight to the finish. Both teams put
everything they had on the line to win the game. Play went from 4-on-4 to
5-on-3 for the Huskies, while neither team relented. At 10:30 Oregon
scored to tie the game. Both teams picked up the pace as the checks began
to fly. Then at 6:45 Husky Matt Carlson scored the game-winning goal, from
a face-off, when he put the puck in the 5-hole. Oregon then went on a
power play at 4:04 but the Huskies killed the one-man advantage. The
battle went down the wire and Oregon pulled their goalie with minutes to
go in the game for a 6-on-5 advantage. With 20 seconds remaining in the
game Brett Lawrence scored his fourth goal of the night on an empty net.
Husky Hockey won the second game of the Athletic Awards I-5 Cup series
with a score of 5-3. The Huskies took 17 shots to the Oregon’s 10. The
Huskies took 4 minutes in penalties to the Ducks’ 6 minutes.
