Game #1 Report – Friday Nov. 16th: 
Huskies 4, Oregon 1

The Huskies hosted the Oregon Ducks in the first game of the 2002 Athletic Awards I-5 Cup. Husky Hockey came out slow the first period as each team tested each other with several good rushes and saves by each goaltender. The Huskies and Ducks each took several penalties but failed to convert. There was some 4-on-4 play and the Huskies also killed a 5-on-3 advantage for Oregon 6 minutes into the game. The first period ended in a tie score with the Huskies taking 10 shots to the Ducks 11 shots. The Huskies took 8 minutes in penalties to the Ducks’ 10 minutes.

The second period the Huskies commanded the period, but the Ducks’ allowed few shots on net. Oregon also had several good rushes but failed to knock one home. The play was not hampered by many penalties as both teams attempted to control the neutral zone. The Huskies continued to hit the goaltender or put the puck over the net. Then, at the end of the period, with 2:08 remaining in the second, the Ducks scored to go up by one. The period ended with the Huskies taking16 shots to the Ducks’ 12. Husky Hockey took 2 penalty minutes to the Ducks’ 6 minutes.

The third period the Huskies came out of the locker room with new energy. They controlled the game and shut down several impressive rushes by the Ducks. The first goal for the Huskies was scored at 15:31 when Adam Senta put in a rebound off of Paul Margolis’ slap shot. At 11:27 the Ducks took another penalty and at 11:08 Brett Lawrence put in a rebound off a Matt Carlson shot. And then at 10:22 Shaun Lawrence took a slap shot, which was rebounded by Brett Lawrence, who scored again. At 8:59 the Ducks went on a 5-on-3 power play, but could not put the puck in against the stingy Husky team defensive play. At 7:13 the teams went into 3-on-3 play, but neither team put the puck in the net. Then at 6:11, on a 4-on-3 advantage for the Huskies, Shaun Lawrence set up to pass to the man in front of the net, while the goalie moved to cover the potential shooter, Lawrence put the puck in the net off the goalie’s back for the fourth and final goal of the night. The Ducks took 12 minutes in penalties to the Husky’s 6 minutes. Husky Hockey also out shot Oregon 26 to 10. The game ended with the Huskies taking a 1-0 lead for the I-5 Cup Series with a score of 4-1.
