Game 2 - Saturday October 20, 2001
Huskies 10, MSU 3
The Huskies started the first period by
taking a penalty, which MSU immediately converted into a goal at 19:22. It
took almost 6 minutes for the Huskies get up on the board, when finally at
13:47 Matt Carlson scored while shorthanded. Then at 9:47 defenseman Brian
Smith set up a give and go with Shaun Lawrence, who scored by jamming the
puck in the net. But with 21 seconds left in the first period, MSU scored.
The first period ended with a 2-2 tie.
The second period the Huskies finally
found their pace and started dominating the game. Within 20 seconds of the
start of the second period Charlie Walters jammed in the rebound off of
Randy Shigetani’s slap shot. At 18:39 Matt Carlson received a pass from
Shaun Lawrence, and one-timed it over the goalie. Then at 13:06 Brett
Lawrence stepped out of the corner, decked a defenseman and then the
goalie to put the puck away. With 5:25 remaining in the second, Adam Senta
set up Paul Margolis who scored with a one-time shot in front of the net.
And finally, at 4:24 on a power play, Shaun Lawrence set up Matt Carlson
who was camped on the back door and one-timed the puck passed the goalie.
The second period ended with the Huskies leading 7-2.
The third period started with the Huskies
dropping a goal at 13:25. Less than 20 seconds later the Huskies bounded
back when Charlie Walters took the goalie on one-on-one and scored. Then
at 10:22 Charlie Walters set up Marty Boyd who put the puck away. At 6:45
Matt Carlson set up Brett Lawrence for the final goal of the night.
Final Game Stats:
The Huskies took 62 shots on the MSU goalie, while MSU took 16 shots on
Husky goalie Rick Hewitt. The Huskies took 22 minutes in penalties to
MSU’s 24 minutes in penalties. Defenseman Sean O’Brien led the team in
+/- points with +6. Matt Carlson had 3 goals and 2 assists (1
regular strength, 1 power play and 1 shorthanded goal). Charlie Walters
and Brett Lawrence had 2 goals each, while Shaun Lawrence had 1 goal and 2
assists.
