Game 1 - Friday October 19, 2001
Huskies 7, MSU 2

MSU and the Huskies met in Spokane, Washington for a two-game series over the weekend. Both teams came out sluggish in the first, trying to shake off their travel legs. The play rushed back and forth as the teams settled into their separate paces.  The Huskies went up on the board first at 9:31 when Sean O’Brien took a slap shot on the goalie and the rebound was picked up and put away by Matt Carlson. The period ended with the Huskies leading 1-0.

The second period started off slow again and play was halted at 17:43 when a section of glass around the rink was knocked out. After much delay, the two teams had to move to the second rink in the arena. Play resumed and at 14:41, with 4-on-4 play, Brian Mead jammed one home after a slap shot from Marty Boyd. The second period continued as the Huskies struggled to find their game. With 51 seconds to go MSU scored on a 5-on-3. Then with 12 seconds to go MSU scored again on a 5-on-4. The Huskies took 13 minutes in penalties and a game misconduct in the second period. The period ended with a 2-2 tie.

The third period the Huskies came out with new resolve. Their checking game came alive and the team finally found their groove and started to dominate the play. At 13:13 Shaun Lawrence sped down the ice on a breakaway and beat the goalie low from left to right. Then at 12:54 Matt Carlson fed Brett Lawrence who stepped out of the corner and scored low on the goalie. Less than 10 seconds later the Huskies scored again when Marty Boyd and Brian Mead when down on a 2-on-1 against MSU and Boyd bounced the puck off the defender and into the net. The three quick goals lifted the Huskies and then 2 minutes later Brett Lawrence set up Shaun Lawrence who one-timed it passed the goalie. The final goal of the game came with 4:58 remaining on the clock, on a power play for the Huskies, when Shaun Lawrence set up Brett Lawrence who put the game away.

Final Game Stats:
The Huskies took 54 shots on the MSU goalie, while Husky goalie Scott Southard stopped 15 shots. Each team took 22 minutes in penalties, however the Huskies had 2 game misconducts as well.  Matt Carlson led the team in points with 1 goal and 3 assists. Brett Lawrence had 2 goals and 1 assist, while Shaun Lawrence had 2 goals.
